Thank you for the comment Dick. I have a long time interest and admiration for these folks. Big wall climbing is no country for the incompetent!

I'm an old 'rock rat' Phil, I lived in Colorado for 60 years, I did all the 54 14er's and several climbs on Long's Peak (the only 'big wall' I ever climbed), lots of the canyons and spires too! Always wanted to go to Yosemite but never had the time or money. The only time I climbed out of state was when I went to Utah with the Boulder climbers to climb Six Shooter Peak (I took extra undershorts)LOL.

Yes, the "rock rat culture"! It is very cool that you have spent that kind of time on the 14's! The 14,000' peaks in the Rockies and Sierra Nevada' are pretty effective at separating the backpackers from the mountaineers and climbers. And then there are the free climbers!

It is good to meet you Dick, thanks again for the comment.

Just a quick comment. Free climbing is a result of improvements in equipment and training as is big wave riding and climbing Mt. Everest. We certainly would have tried it if we could.

Thanks for the comment. I think the dubious new element in free climbing is the reality-TV, record breaking drama thing. I do take your point re improvements in equipment, technique and training...."stronger, higher faster"! John Muir was a free climber, but not the athlete we see on these big walls.

I agree, look at the lines on Everest, all it takes is money now! Honnold climbing El Cap creates a lot of people who will get hurt eventually, he is a natural, few people have the skill and nerve to do what he does! I was a follower of Layton Kor and Gaston Rebuffat (I swear old Rubberfoot could stand on his own shoulder) but never attained any notoriety. Now, I'm pushing 81, and can only dream of the past!

I'm just jealous. I could have done more climbs if I could have finished them in one day because I just couldn't sleep hanging from a couple of pitons.

HA!! I never did that either, we usually rapped down and slept in a tent, never did more than 2 days for a climb! I never considered myself as any more than a 'crack rat', I would never know how to do a big climb or expedition!

Boot Flake is a feature on the “nose route” for climbers on Yosemite’s El Capitan. Shown in the first photo, it can be seen with the unaided eye from El Capitan Meadow where these photos were taken. Climbers make use of vertical seams for most of their assent. When a seam ends a common move is to make a pendular “swing” from an anchor point to move laterally to a new vertical seam. This sequence shows two pairs of climbers making independent Boot Flake swings. The second photo shows the lead climber in red having completed the swing and establishing an anchor for his partner at the top of the boot with their gear ready to pass across. No 3 shows the gear across and the lead climber of a second party moving up the right side of the boot. No 4 shows the second party lead repelling down the face of the boot after tying into an anchor at the top of the boot. In the bottom left corner of no 5 the lead climber begins his swing to the right. No 6 shows a successful swing to the left. And on an on it goes, they are about 2/3 of the way to the top!
This is probably more than most folks want to know but without a bit of explanation….. it’s just some guys hanging around. Some of these were taken with a full frame and some with a crop sensor body, both on a Sigma 150-500 lens.

These are great shots, Phil, despite the fact seeing these climbers give me the cold chills.

Thanks Rob, I always appreciate your willingness to take the time to comment on an "old" post. These climbers interest me in a different way in my old age and I understand the cold chills reaction.

Looking at these from a purely photographic standpoint, the only one that has some visual interest beyond reporting what rocks look like and climbers do is #2. Some work to bring out the tension of the space to be traversed between the lone climber and the group would make this an interesting photo.
