What is Happening with XQD Cards?

I have heard rumors that Nikon was going to produce XQD cards and I have heard that CFexpress is going to replace the XQD cards and be physically compatable with one another. In Nikon cameras, will that require firmware update? During black Friday and cyber Monday I was looking for a deal on 120MB card, nothing. So, before buying a Sony XQD card, I thought I would ask what is happening now and in the months to come. I don't need another card but nice to have insurance and flexability. I do like how fast they upload large files.

Sony XQD also requires their reader. You know how rumors go. I use the 32MB cards and have to fill one in a days shoot.

CFexpress compatible with XQD?

From 2017:
"Delkin recently confirmed to a reader (thanks broxibear) that their CFExpress cards will not work in any current camera that uses an XQD slot"

Perhaps that has changed.

I hope you meant that as a joke. I use Sony and Lexar XQD cards and a Lexar reader.

They need a dedicated XQD reader, it does not have to be a Sony built unit. Other people make them. I happen to have the Sony, it's fast.

I use Sony XQD cards in my D850 to help when I shoot 9 fps. I am not worried at all about the future. Someone will always make something that will work in my camera. I am not concerned in the least.

I was told by B&H that only the Sony reader will read the 32GB cards, any reader works on the larger ones. I have no idea if it's true.

I have had the following DSLR camera bodies, Olympus C2500L, Nikon D70s, D300, D300s D700 and now shooting with a D810. Since 2000 I have not used anything but CF memory and I am very pleased with my decision. CF is reliable, stable and fast (I shoot landscapes). All the consternation about other formats I s just noise in my head.
