A different Competition.

Last week the club had its final competition before the Christmas recess. Loosely titled HOLD THE FRONT PAGE, we were allowed up to 5 images that we would consider as worthy for inclusion in a Newspaper.
Newspaper images break the usual rules - get the story is the main criteria - everything else is secondary. In the recent London Bridge Terrorist attack sharpness wasn't even an issue, but getting sufficient quality to supplement the story was. Odd formats were often welcomed as these are easier to work around with today's electronic page setting. And the photographer was often expected to provide a title. Some papers such as the Times prefer colour throughout, whilst the Guardian had a place for Black and White.
The competition was judged by The Times Picture Editor who mentioned that his team could go through as many as 20k images a day. Many would wind up on the floor as early rounds were strictly YES or NO after a few seconds.
My 5 entries were slowly whittled down until I had two in the final 12, and these got 2nd (outright) and 3rd (joint) placings. Here are my two entries.
In 2nd place - COMING HOME - a local artist / sculptor placed 100+ silhouetted Great War soldiers on a hillside and I snapped some of them. It was approx. 1:4 a difficult ratio to work successfully but much liked by newspapers. The picture editor said he might have cropped a shade to the right to include only full figures. This was a good fill in for current news and he would have considered using (and paying) for this.
In joint 3rd was Chiltern Floods. This would have been used as a nice image - a stand alone - with a few lines, or had The Chilterns (a range of hills I live on) suffered particularly bad flooding in light of recent occurrences.

Two smashing pictures. congratulations. And what a fantastic idea by the artist I would love to get a shot of that to add my WW1 poppies etc. You may be interested in a sculpture that should be finished up here sometime next year, google A46 Lancaster bomber sculpture.

It looks like you did well in an area of photography most of use are not familiar. So congratulations on your success. Did the judges comment on why they selected the images that made the final list?
