Not a fad.
No interest personally in one.

Been using “Nixplay” for years. Love them! Photos are in the Nixplay cloud and the OS is simple enough for a 5 year old or grandmother to use. Seeing photos as you pass by in a great looking frame is wonderful and so much better than simply on a computer screen. One other plus is with your permission (as frame owner) you may give others in your family or sphere of influence access to not only your photos, but they can add photos of their own (the grandkids, etc.) so you you can see theirs as well.

Additionally my digital frame allows me to set it to show photos if people are in the room, a great power and screen saver motion detector ability.

All in all, the whole Nixplay experience is first-class and excellent all around. No doubt there are competitors out there worth a look as well. Great Christmas gift for you and family with current discounts to boot.

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Second the nix brand. We have 3 of the wifi cloud OS versions, one at our house and one for each of the grandparents. Each runs a customized “set”. There are 3 albums on all, plus one customized album that appears as appropriate on our and the respective family sides.

Don’t want to jinx it, but have been running for 3 years now with nary a glitch. The families love it. We get lots of comments on even older pictures in our set, and the grandparents, all of whom have some level of dementia or Alzheimer’s, it is a new set every day!!!!

Updating their frame out-of-state remotely has worked great. 3 families members can jump on the website and add pictures at any time. I ordered all three, set up and got working at home, and then sent two down to families for Xmas. Were up and running in 5 minutes (power and wifi connection, and we were in business)

We are using a 5x7, which is not even sold anymore. With these changing pics every 10 seconds, no need to worry about high resolution. this, for us, is not meant for fine photography (though it could be if we wanted), but easy way to share “snapshots” between families.

Highly recommend this brand.

My 86-year-old sis-in-law, not tech-savvy, was given one by one of her sons this year. It is perfect for her because she doesn't have to rely on Facebook or downloading files or accumulate more prints to see family photos, and her son keeps it updated for her.

My late Dad bought three. All failed within a year. Two were branded Kodak. Manufacturers, distributors, and retailers wouldn't support them, and consumers generally got a very bad opinion of them.
They are almost all made for pennies on the ten dollar bill. If you buy one, plug it into a very good surge protector!

Thank you, burkphoto, for posting (at least through the first two and a half pages of this topic,) the only contrarian response. While I can only opine that I highly doubt that Digital Photo Frames are just a transient fad, I know nothing of their reliability or performance.

Thus I ask whether someone on the Hog knows of any sort of credible study on the reliability of these devices manufactured during the past, say, 10 years, OR how I could go about investigating this without paying a subscription fee to a website such as Consumer Reports. So far, using an internet search engine, all I’ve found are URLs with titles such as, "The X best digital picture frames in 2019”.

I too, have a digital picture frame, and love it. For this I would go with something as big as you can.
I also use on my computer screen (windows 10), settings, Background, slide show, change every minute, and selected a file with lots of photos I have taken.

We're on our third. I can't think of a better way to display my photos, and visitors seem to like it. Also gave one to the 91 YO mother-n-law and she loves it.

We have three. The best one is the Nik 15". A feature I like is the time-on time-off setting. Off at 11 pm on at 7 am. They say this extends the life of the frame as they don't run 24/7.

Several years ago I got a tablet with Win8 OS. I used it on the farm stand for a while and then it was surplus. So I just loaded a bunch of photos into it and used them as a screen saver and set the tablet so it doesn't turn off (as long as it's plugged in). It makes a fine digital frame.

I have always thought that I could do that with an old computer and monitor. No cost and it uses stuff I have lying around and I would have a larger image than most of the digital frames I've seen. But last time I moved I recycled all my old computers and I'm using all my monitors at the moment. Could do the same thing with an old TV, of which I have several. Just need an old computer and an HDMI cable. Maybe I'll have to invest in a new computer. GAS to the rescue.

I bought two - because the first one stopped working. I recently saw one on sale for $107 - too much for two little. I can see a commercial use for one, but not in my house.

On the other hand, I've heard that an old (slow) iPad could be used as a digital frame.

If you have the right app, any tablet can be used for one.
