I like the color better, but both have their places.

The color is in keeping with the playful grin of a proud and happy Dad. Sometimes b&w is used to remove the distraction of bright colors; there is no need for that here.

In my opinion both work. Both need a little bit more contrast.

"With a whistle, they both flew back up the chimney..."

The color version has the better story telling elements.

The BW is rather flat.

A vignette framing would bring a greater focus to the relationship of the two.

When photographing children, especially newborn, I prefer monochrome. Monochrome photos are simplier and much more universal to all to appreciate. Occasionally I will schlep out my old Canon EOS Rebel 2000 and pop in a roll of CN400 film. This really is a Black and White film. However when color processing (C-41) is used, a Sepia Effect is created. The photograph does have an archival quality that cannot be duplicated.

Happy Shooting!

Color as the B&W looks flat

Brent, there's an old saying regarding photographing people. Color shows what they're wearing. Black and white reveals the personality.

In this case, both are equally acceptable. Simply depends on your preference of b&w as opposed to colour.

Both. I have different reasons for liking both approaches to the same photo. Many images look great both ways, although with different evocations.
