Hard to believe, but someone actually paid 120k for a banana because it was taped to a wall and called art.
It's on the level of some photography and drawn art I've seen.
If Joe Schmoe from the street enters obscure junk he's mocked and shunned. If a well known or rich 'artist' enters the same thing it's looked at as genius.

If I tape a bunch of bananas to my wall, will some one here pay me $10,000 for them?

Only a very rich, hungry monkey.

https://www.foxnews.com/us/new-york-man-eats-art-basel-bananaSuch is art.....not what you do - but to who you can sell it to.
But then we get this argument about: is ART a learned skill or an innate natural 'ability'. OR what makes an iconic photograph...? answer.....have you got the 'gift of the gab'.
Too much money and not enough sense.

When i saw "Art" I wondered what his last name was??

https://www.foxnews.com/us/new-york-man-eats-art-basel-bananaWhat is the idiot who paid that much money for that crap going to do when the "nanner" starts to rot! Some people just should not be allowed to have money. That person could have helped some homeless people this Christmas.
I think that Duchamp did move the goal post and buried it somewhere.
As for "Monetary Value", it is the buyer who sets that amount and pays for it.

YES - The age old question: What is ART?, Marshal McLuhan (writer; The medium is the Massage) quote; "Art is anything you can get away with." IMHO he's almost right.
In my 50+ years working with and teaching art I do have a few observations:
Really great art is timeless
Art is contextual, in that it must be viewed within the context it was created.
Art can be anything as long as more than two people agree it is art.
The price of a piece of art is what someone will pay for it.
In our modern societies world of "fine Art" there is a lot of (what I call) esoteric blah, blah, blah
Finally, with respect to the $120,000 banana, there were actually three, two were sold for $120,000, the third was eaten by a performance artist (I wonder what he got paid?)
The artist that taped the banana to the wall is the same guy that created a solid gold toilet that sold for big$, it was a statement about our modern society. He has a history of making these types of works. Duchamp was the first to make these types of "statements" Which is why Mcluhan made that statement in the first place. This brings us back to one of my first statements;
Art is contextual, it must be viewed in the context it was made.

Someone ate that banana!
He was escorted out of the gallery.
Charges may be filed against him.
Maybe he thought it was a snack for hungry patrons?

After all the banana was placed in a temporary manner. Hungry? Why not...I see it as the completion of the Artist's installation!
