Sony Camera Question

At the present time I am using Canon EOS 60. I am a new photo enthusiast and can not say I am good at it. But I am impressed with Sony a77, to me it seems like Sony does a better job and I am thinking of purchasing and switching to Sony. Thus I have couple of questions from the experts.
1. Can you download Raw files from Sony to Photoshop?
2. Is there a big difference in performance between the two brands? or am I going to waste my mony?
Your input is greatly appreciated.

I am a Sony user, but haven't used the a77.
1. Yes, Photoshop supports my Sony a850 RAW files. Sometimes it takes a while for Photoshop to catch up to the latest camera RAW files.
2. If you are a new photo enthusiast, then spend your time learning the equipment you have and the art. There is NO disadvantage to using Canon versus any other brand. It (learning your equipment and the art) will make WAY more difference than chasing after the next great widget. After you have become thoroughly familiar with your equipment and have mastered its capabilities will you begin to sense what improvements will be valuable to you.

Hope this helps.

You're asking for input (opinion) so I'll jump in with a few thoughts.

I own the following Canon bodies: 10D (converted to infrared), 5D (backup camera), 7D and 5D MII. Contemplating selling the 5D and 5D MII and buying a 1Dx and 5D MIII. I own a lot of Canon glass and accessories to the extent I have 84 points in the Canon Professional Services Program. (Not braging but to let you know where I'm coming from)

I also own a couple of Nikon PS's, a Canon PS, an Olympus PS along with a Sony NEX-5 (for sale) and a NEX-7.

Based on my experience both Canon and Nikon have better camera and lens selections and if Nikon would give me their pro bodies and lenses (for free) I would go to the dark side.

My experience with Sony is they tend toward proprietary connections (flash) which means that I have to search long and hard to get something like a Radio Popper or Pocket Wizard. Also their lens array is not as complete as Canon or Nikon. Third party lens mfgs. do not make all their lenses in a Sony mount. My perception is that Sony is just not as complete of a line as Canon or Nikon while their prices are equal to or higher than Canon or Nikon. I've also seen some complaints as to life (shutter actuations) of Sony bodies on the web.

Depending on the Sony body you can edit Sony ARW files in ACR. Adobe seems to update ACR to read new iterations of CR2 or NEF quicker than ARW.

All that being said Sony makes some nice products and can be paired with some mighty fine lenses by Carl Zeiss. The best camera is the one you have with you and the equipment that fails is normally that which is located 6 inches behind the viewfinder.

Let me know when you get ready to divest yourself of the 60D.

I am a Sony User and yes, Sony do not have the lens of the others but they are newcomers who are catching up fast, they also supply parts to the big two for their cameras, I have the Sony a200 and the a57 and they are fine cameras the a77 is the best in its class just read the reviews, one day Sony will be the number 1 and that is not an idle boast.

I agree with oldmalky and think Sony are commited to bieng No. 1 in the photo world. They are innovative and are not afraid to release new ideas and designs which it seems others start to follow. I use Sony and to me their range of lenses is expanding very quickly. I would get hold of a a77 and try it, I don't think you will be dissapointed

Beside Nikon cameras (D800, D7000 and D2X) I own Sony cameras (A900, A850, A700 and A77) so I can speak from experience. The A77 is unlike your DSLR it is an SLT camera with some amazing features. While it is recognized that Sony is not the leading manufacturer in the camera industry like Nikon and Canon, Sony produces great equipment (Nikon also uses Sony sensors). Now to your questions:
1. Camera preference is an individual choice, but if you were to choose Sony cameras you would not be disappointed with the performance of the A77. As far as lens for the A77, Sony has "G" and Zeiss lenses that range in the same price as some top Nikon and Canon lenses and their lens is excellent. Sony also carries lower price lenses. Sigma and Tamron both make lens for Sony. I agree with one of the respondents, you must handle one first either rent or go to a camera shop to know if it is right for you.
2. I use Photoshop CS6 (and have used CS4 and CS5) without problems with ARW (Sony RAW files). Adobe Camera Raw is up-to-date on all Sony cameras except the A99 and RX-100 as these are brand new.
Hope this helps you.

Thanks for all your input, I think definitely should rent one and then make up my mind. Thanks Robert for your input, I have been having focus issues and was thinking Sony is better and wanted to switch. I should spend more time and learn my camera first before spending more money. Thank you all.

Actually, with a fairly cheap adapter, you can put any flash or shoe accessory on a sony dslr. As for limits to lens selection and other accessories, only the very most specialized items might be hard to come by in a sony version. I'm not sure where you come up with the reliability issue-it is a non issue. As you may be aware the imaging chips in most nikon dslrs are made by sony. As a former retail photo equipment salesperson, I can tell you there is not a penny's worth of difference in the end results that you are able to attain among all of the brands of dslr. It comes down to your prejudices(primarily) going in and how it feels in your hands. For the record I doubt that any of us, from the most experienced pro to the rankest beginner, utilize more than a tiny percentage of the capabilities of our chosen camera.

I have tried every adapter I could get my hands on and still can't get my Nikon SB-910 and SB-700 to work on Sony Alpha cameras or visa-versa.

It's true that Sony has a proprietary flash, but it's also true that everyone else has a propriety shoe as well. Canon flash will mount on a Nikon but you can't use it, same with Nikon and same with Sony. Why do people go looking for reasons to trash Sony (or anyone else) without the facts.

I would endorse what Flashgordonbrown said, there is no bad DSLR out there and they will all respond to good user input with very good images.

If you want real innovation with your camera, then Sony is the brand making all the waves at the moment. NEX cameras, RX-100, RX-1, Sony SLT, in partnership with Zeiss and offering excellent lenses and we now hear that Hasselblad are joining with Sony to use Sony technology and to adopt the "e" and a-mount. Interesting times.

The OP askes about the a77, this is a brilliant camera and in my prejudiced view (I have a900 and a77 and NEX-7) leaves the competition playing catch up. Not that it is streets ahead in IQ (it is better) but the on camera controls which make it easier for the user to achieve the required result are unmatched. I'm thinking principally of the WYSIWYG EVF which effectively means you never again will need to "chimp", histogram or level available in the EVF, focus peaking which highlights in focus areas and a "focus magnify" function for critical final focus tweaking.

I didn't choose Sony in that I come from Minolta roots and Sony was the inevitable progression from that, but now I am very pleased to be with Sony. Sony is not perfect but who is?

Oh, I agree with you and would not trash Sony (I love my Sony Alphas and also my RX-100). I include this photo taken at the fair with my new RX-100, sweet pocket camera.

I'm really interested in the RX-100 and would love to see more results and hear your thoughts about it (strengths and weaknesses). My current pocket camera is the Canon 90 Powershot, which is showing its age and is ready for replacement.

Great reply, specially that you are cornered with Sony into their lenses and proprietary systems. That is why I only owned one Sony camera in my life -- back in the time they started using their memory "sticks" .

Why do they want to separate themselves from main stream? That is not what makes a brand "unique". I think they are still using them? And lenses and everything are sometimes expensier if not equal to the top 2 brands. I am going to buy a Sony soon, but that is because I want to experience a thin camera with a pancake lens. It's a basic camera for day to day that is reduced in price as of today.
