There is nothing that compared to the starting on the ole radial engine. It would cough, ban, fart, and cough again before beginning to purr. How sweet were those sounds and the smell as well. Loved you photo.

Ah, A1 Skyraider, P2V, C121. I was used to the Wright R1820 in the T-28 and Grumman S2.
In that Ford trimotor it has three 450 hp. R-985 Pratt Whitney engines. Each engine has 985 in.³

I am curious as to the 2-blade prop instead of a 3 or 4 blade prop. I know there is a reason - I just don't know why.
Nice really sharp shot of the single bank nine cylinder. I guess this engine did not have enough power to swing a larger prop or one with more blades.
