Luminar 4 lights and shadows

As far as it has several good filters for different adjustments, luminar 4 has lots of dark sides to me. I will enumerate some of them after a month of trials.
1) It is very slow and if you try to harry up by clicking the mouse several times, the program collapses and you must start again. My computer is with intel core I5, 12Gb of RAM and Intel HD Graphic 4400.
2) The nightmare begins when you use layers and masks. If you add layers with masks adjustment and then go to the background layer (or other layer) you cannot see the adjustment you made in the layer, so you see only the adjustment you made in the background layer. That is a nightmare to work. The only benefit, if it exists, is that you can save each layer separately.
3) Suppose you make an adjustment with a radial or a gradient mask, you leave it and go to another layer. If you come back you cannot edit the mask again, so you cannot modify the position or size of the radial or gradient mask.
4) Sky replacement. Ok you can do that with only one click, but you want no modification in your own sky. But in my experience, I saw it enlarges the original sky. I believe the program does that in order to fit in the new photography, although the two have the same dimension.
The introduction of AI is a very good tool and I believe the program has a very good potential, but up to now has many issues that must have been solved before launch to be at least at the same level as competitors.
It would be a good marketing police that Skylum team fixes all the issues as soon as possible and send a free copy of the new version, as Microsoft did with Windows 10, if they want to be in this market.

Slightly off-topic, but related. Multiple eBay sellers are selling Luminar 4 with liketime key, etc. Purchase is for emailed version, and ranges from $9.99- 29.00. How is this possible?

It's not, it's eBay. If you buy one of those lifetime copies let me know. I want to introduce you to my cousin Louie. Next time you need a car or truck Louie can take care of you at a price you won't believe!

Never said I'd buy one. Just curious how this crap gets advertised. But thanks for your recommendation.

Hello Jorge. I recently got my copy of Luminar 4, and I agree that it is slower than I would like, but it can do things that would take me hours with some other tools, so it kind of averages out for me. As far as not being to see edits in different layers, if I want to edit a layer and then see how it combines with the edit in another layer, I make a new layer combining the layers I have edited into one layer which then shows all of the edits. There are so many hidden features, and I have not even scratched the surfaces of the possibilities. As with any tool, it takes time to learn, and less is better for the sliders until you really get familiar with them. As for the Sky Replacement tool, it is great but if you have reflections, you will have to use a sky image that is not in the included package. The internal skies cannot be converted to layers. If you use another sky that you have outside of the program, you can use it to make a layer that you can then flip for the reflected sky. I really like that there are masking options in all of the editing tools. All in all, I think it is a great tool, and with some time spent on learning it's capabilities, it will surely turn out to be one of your favorite go-to editors.

Hello Jorge. I recently got my copy of Luminar 4,... (show quote)

Jim Nix on YouTube recently did a tutorial on Sky Replacement, and I believe inverted one of the supplied skies for a water reflection. I could be wrong in that he may have used one of his Sky Replacements, but don’t think so.

L4 for me is slower than L3, which is disappointing. A little buggy as well. I also experience occasional system freezes when using L4. I now find myself going back and forth between L4 and PSE 14 to get my edits done. Hopefully Skylum will fix these problems soon if they want to succeed.

I’m tempted to try out Capture One, which some of my Fuji friends are using with good success.

As a Fuji user you can download and use C1 express for free. And the upgrade to C1 Pro is discounted. The difference between C1 and Luminar 4 is night and day. Luminar 4's raw workflow is destructive. It's a parametric editor that behaves like a raster editor which is just nuts. For a parametric editor to force you to re-do editing work in order to adjust or make a change in an edit is tantamount to a crime. It's a show stopper for me for sure. And it is slow, and buggy, and the erase/clone tools are crude and ineffective and all masking is rasterized! -- not ready for prime time.

L4 hides all the filters in menus and sub menus, so I use L3 too. I use both apps as Photos plugins and it’s fun to work a photo then export to the desktop and redo it in the other app, then export again, etc etc
AI is good but tweaking what’s done for you is the real fun. FWIW..
