Inflation and the internet has taken a toll on the U.S. Postal Service.
Maybe you can remember when First Class Stamps were only eight cents.
For the current generation that is former president Dwight Eisenhower image on the
stamps. Now the rate is fifty five cents.

Jerry, I remember the 3 cent stamp also.
I never thought they would cost more than 3 cents 🎭
You can go on line a buy first class postage stamps for about $40.00 for a 100 stamp roll. These are forever stamps that may be a couple of years old.
Captain Al
I bought 100 each of Forever stamps, two days before the prices went up from 50 cents to 55 cents. I saved $5, and had to go to the Post Office anyway. Buying Forever stamps before price increases, can offset the price . I also remember Air Mail Stamps and Special Delivery Stamps, that you could purchase at the Post Office. Now, all long distance places, go by Air Flight, on a First Class Stamp.

Pixelmaster, I remember the rate and Ike. Let us not forget gas was around $.30 a gallon and we thought that was way to high
.

I remember the Pony Express.
Thanks. I would have sworn that the penny post card lasted long than that.
As a publisher of a monthly magazine I deal with the USPS every day it seems. I have no idea how they do their pricing.
The mailing statement that we receive each month is harder to read than Chinese arithmetic. Some formula of zip codes, amount of advertising, number mailed to subscribers in county and perhaps even the
amount of daylight in the this county on the day the magazine is mailed. For years our office was in Fort Worth and the printer was in Fort Worth. We threw them a curve ball in 1999 and moved our office to Morgan Mill (70 miles west). Then we moved our printer to Jefferson City, Missouri. And they still want to know how many in county subscribers we have.
Funny.
Not as funny as our local post office in our little town of 200. You never know when it is going to be open.
And it seems like a new person is there every time I go there.
Early next week we will mail the biggest magazine that we have printed since 1983 (444 pages). It is going to interesting to see what it costs to mail it as compared to 1983. Of course that "in county" figure will come into play.
Again. Thanks for the figures. Good topic. Every once in a while I tell somebody that I am going to send them some by Air Mail. I make a person-to-person call to tell me about it. Collect.
I do remember the 3 cent stamp for letters and the long standing penny stamp for post cards.
Congress is in charge of the Post Office. Prices have to be approved by Congress. Since, the Post Office is now operating with big deficits. Raising prices on postage stamps were suppose to close the deficits. But, it has had little effects on the deficits.
