I have about 2000 pics on my lap top that are not on my desk top, I want to move some of them over, not sure the best way. Should I get a flash drive? LR CC to LR CC
I would just use a flash drive to ‘copy’ them from one to the other as probably the quickest method. After you are satisfied they copied properly then you can erase the ones on your laptop if you want to.
I would use a flash drive, then right click on the drive, then click Properties to see how many files you are transferring. Then do the same when they are on your desktop to verify the numbers match - you transferred all.
Are the computers networked with shared drives? If so, just copy and paste over the network and when you are satisfied they are all on you desktop you can delete them or use the laptop as a backup. If the photos are too large for one flash drive you'll have to copy them in groups. As a side note, Costco has a 5T portable drive for $89. I just picked one up to use as a backup to the backup. In addition, I shoot most of my photos of events in the community where I live, so when I travel I can take all of my photos with me if I need to use them while on the road. I support our monthly magazine with photo layouts for some of the articles and two page layouts of events here where I live.... so I need access to them more frequently than the average person. Good luck...feel free to ask if you have any questions.

It may not be as fast as a single transfer from Computer to USB drive, but you only have to move them once over the network which makes the overall process faster.
Copying to a USB stick and using sneakernet would be MUCH faster that transferring a ton of information over encrypted WIFI. Did that ONCE. Took an hour or three.....
Fine for a few, but not a crapload.

Probably so, but the lazy in me would rather cp /Directory/* remote/directory/* one time and not have to go through multiple steps. But some 802.11N/AC set up in the right conditions would be pretty quick.
When I move my TAR archive of my RAW files, it takes around 45 minutes to an hour on .11N across the house.

Well,
most of us have some kinda PC and a wireless router of some sort.
Kinda funny for me, having been working with, building, and programming computers for over 45 years, and having been a network administrator for, I guess around 7 years, I just have run-of-the-mill off the shelf stuff.
That's all I need.

Yeah, I lost all interest to get too involved at home. I use a simple linksys router and an old desktop converted to a data server. I've even moved to using gui to do a lot of copy/transfer operations...lol.

We have two laptops and a tower (desktop), all shared (all running Windows 7), so we can move files between any computer.
Files on the tower are backed up by Carbonite, so anything we do on a laptop, we just copy it to the tower and it gets backed up. (The tower is kinda like a server, for us, but is not technically.)
I use a flash drive or an SD card. If you happen to have an XQD card that would work also.

Network the laptop with desktop. Drag and drop the pics, folder, whatever from one to the other. Quickest and easiest, IMO
Any portable device that has the capacity will work. More importantly you should use your Lightroom on the laptop to export as catalog and then Lightroom on your desktop to import. That way you don’t loose any edits
Hugh
Are the 2000 photos in Lightroom currently? If so, export catalog from laptop to desktop. If they are not and you have Lightroom on your laptop do an import (copy). Then you’ll export to desktop. Highly recommend Lightroom.
