Keep in mind that whatever you bring, you'll be carrying it with you wherever you go. I would suspect a wide angle would be more useful, but that depends on what you plan to shoot. Depending on its size and weight, I suspect the 18-270 mm would be a good choice.

Take a simple point and shoot and enjoy your snapshots.

I would word that differently. "Bring a compact camera with a decent zoom range." "Point and shoot" should be deleted from the language.

I'm taking a wild guess: a Nikon FX DSLR.

In another post, the OP said she has a Nikon D7200.

Good eye. I have been chastised enough here for presuming that someone with FX lenses uses an FX camera.

I went for a bicycle riding 10 days. Tok a mirrorless Sony A6000 with 10-18, kit 16-50, and 55 -210. They all fit in my thinkTANK hit/ shoulder bag and I never rode without it except up the volcano (iPhone had to do there ) Iused them all. The only problem I had was feeling a little guilty sometimes holding up the other 3 hard ass riders but they got copies of all the shots they wanted so it was all good in the end. We did not disturb the whales.

you really no not need the long lens, take the Road To Hana very nice and it takes all day
you will see alot of whales this time of year

Unless you have a strong interest in birds. Or distant whales. Or nude beaches from the cliff tops. Or water falls that would take an hour to hike to. Or...or...or.

I am so sorry....I didn't see anymore notices in my email about responses. (Probably all my error!) Anyway, I have a Nikon D7200 and should have mentioned that to start with!

I will bring my Nikon D7200 to use with the lenses that I end up bringing. I do love photography but that is not the reason for the trip. Photography will be a part of it of course. Anytime I can sit down at my computer and bring new photos into Lightroom, I am happy!
I also have a Nikon 300mm F/4 that I use while kayaking. That have my 1.4 tc on it.
The one concern I have thought about (and someone mentioned it) is the whales being too close with the longer lens. You never know do you? :-) I will have both on a boat tour.

Take a look at the quality of photos on her Flickr page and reconsider making such a silly suggestion. Who cares that she didn't mention her exact camera. It is obviously a Nikon DSLR.

Thank you!

If you have, or can borrow a bridge camera like a Nikon P900 or P1000 or Canon SX series or similar, you won’t have to schlep anything else and you’ll enjoy yourself more.
Haleakala is a great place to go especially if you get there for sunrise. Also, Hana (I think) is a very interesting town.

I am not a good resource on the lens, we did live on Maui for 3 years. Where will you be staying and how long are you there?

We go to Maui annually (own a time share). I schlepped my 200-500 the last two trip in the event I see any whales migrating. October is still a little early for whales. This last trip I never took 200-500 out of the villa. However, when you go it is "whale season", so I would schlep the long lens. Several years back before owning the long lens were there in Dec. and that was my motivation for buying the long lens. We stay on Ka'anapali Beach and you can shoot whales migrating from our villa. So far no luck with whale shots in Oct. I use my walk around go to lens which is my 24-120. There is so much to see and shoot with my go to lens that when we travel there next October, I'll probably leave my 200-500 home. I may kick myself but as someone already mentioned too hard to schlep around in the heat and humidity. Have fun. While on Maui, be sure you don't miss going to Warren and Annabelle's magic dinner show. It is located in Lahaina right next to Ruth Chris Steakhouse upstairs. Make a reservation before you go as they sell out frequently. We've seen the show for the last four years we've been there and intend on making reservations again when we return in October. If you're interested in other places PM me.
Have fun
Lane

Thanks Lane...I just may get back to you on your offer of advice for other places!
