Do I need to remove the battery and use the plug-in charger, or can I use a USB charger with a ‘transformer’? I don’t want to fry the electrics.
I was traveling and tried using a cell phone USB wall plug. No-go. I used the Nikon charger download cord. Dead battery still dead.
Can I charge like this?

Your Camera came with a charger, the manual indicates that the battery can only be charged in that charger. See page 25 of the users manual. Nikon generally does not have internal charging circuits in their larger Cameras. The reason is that the batteries both heat up and emit very minuet amount of gas. These could damage the Camera.
For car charging you can buy an inverter that plugs into any accessory port that will give you AC for a regular battery charger. I keep one in the hatchback just in case. Good for blowing up the aerobed for the tent, too.
Your manual will tell you if you can plug directly into the camera usb port. On my canon, canon sells a direct usb type C charger and cable for the volts and amps needed, so I'd say if Nikon doesn't sell one for that purpose then don't try it.
I thought that the only Nikon battery, for full frame mirrorless, are the Z series. That can be charged inside or outside the camera. The EN EL 15b battery. Which can also be an upgrade and substitute to the EN EL 15a, used on a D850. Which cannot be charged via USB cable, like the Z series full frame cameras.

I get the two-batteries-with-charger for my cameras on Amazon. It's cheaper than one Nikon battery.
Be careful with third party battery manufacturers (non-Nikon).
Some may work just fine while others are simply awful.
The savings just is not worth it for me.
