If you have read Hogan over the past several years and his criticisms of Nikon you should find it hard to call him a fanboy. In any case a tiny sample of the entire Japanese market can hardly be called a factual representation.
Personally I have found DPR over the past year to have begun looking like a Sony "fanboy" with less positive coverage of both Canon and Nikon than before.
Could it be Sony gives their dealers a better profit margin?

In this situation, I'm not sure #1 in sales really means much more than Sony having a very effective marketing department. The truth is, we are manipulated by clever advertising and covert marketing (such as paid reviewers on the internet) more often than we are willing to believe.

I believe that applies to all products and services today.

"Sony has overtaken Canon and Nikon to claim the top slot for full-frame camera market share in Japan, according to BCN Ranking. Sony showed growth in the overall full-frame, APS-C and fixed-lens digital camera categories from November 2018 to October 2019, as well.

Ultimately, Sony saw its total full-frame camera market share in Japan increase from 31.6% to 38%, while Canon was bumped down to second place at 36% market share compared to last year's 37.8%. Nikon came in at 24% of the full-frame market, a decrease from last year's 29.1%."

Copied from DPR, their link is easy to find if you want to read the entire article.

What does this mean for existing camera owners...probably very little...just trivia.

I could care less who is #1. I shoot for print sales, I use Nikon and some Sony products. BOTH are outstanding, #1 is for those who want to using #1 stuff, as for me, I am a photographer, so I look at it differently. Being #1 does not mean they make the best equipment for all photographers. It only means they are #1 in sales. It does not mean #1 will make a photographer better. But that is what some folks THINK.

There is no debate - as you say , just interesting trivia. I believe all three brands are now made in China.

Personally, I like Sony cameras. Not surprised they are number one in Japan.

Lol ... yes it's all trickery and chicanery!

If you don't think it's important to Nikon and the other companies ... you don't understand the Japanese at all.

Canon is pretty safe. Nikon is not.
Sony owns the FF market in Japan and the US. Apsc as well.

It just means that he often makes mistake. Since mirrorless is better but he didn't know that so he had cameras with mirror that he had to shed.

Whoa! I'd better check to see if my D750 is still working.

I find that somewhat surprising, considering the small number of FF models that Sony has compared with Canon and Nikon. I think their lead will continue to grow.

EDIT: Actually there isn't much of a difference in the number of models offered. Sony has the a99, a9, and a7, but there are different version of those cameras. Nikon has the D5, D850, D750, and D610.

Sony is now making Nikon's high-end sensors. They've embedded a clever bug into the Nikon cameras with these Sony sensors: the Nikon DSLR suddenly dies after a encrypted number of flips of the mirror the sensor can detect as different from the original Sony mirrorless cameras. Just look online for 'Nikon Sudden Death Syndrome'. I've seen a thread where they think from your Nikon serial number you can identify the week number in the calendar year (01 -> 53) your camera is most likely to die. The syndrome isn't even very hush-hush.
