I don't disagree with your post at all but would simply point out that there is nothing in any other country that travelers/photographers should be watchful of that they would not encounter right here in America.

The difference is that here in the US the thief is a hero and if you tried to stop him you would be the one in trouble.

It is your fear that makes the wolf so much larger ...

Indeed, fear paints the target on your back.

And fear is the thing that gets one creative to handle the issue at hand.

68 countries now over a 66 year life. Never, never, never a tour, refuse to herded with the "group" all independent travel. Yes the Middle East and Africa as well as other "sketchy" countries. Always stay in local hotels, never a large chain, eat at local restaurants and lots of street carts as well. Never paranoid, always careful but I do not over do it, perhaps experience counts here. Never ever have had anything stolen and rarely have I gotten sick. Lately I have included a new layer of safety for when I am away from the hotel room for my laptop and other gear I might leave behind. It is a travel safe made by PACSAFE. This size holds as much as a small daypack. Just a little more peace of mind. It shows it can be worn, yet I only leave it locked to the bed frame or something else in the hotel room. Folds or rolls up small, easily fits in your luggage.

Once in Mexico I gave my camera to a young kid to take a picture of us. He lined us up and then took off. Never saw him or my camera again. Fortunately it was an inexpensive camera.

Here is what I saw while visiting Edinburgh Scotland.
I was walking down a very crowded sidewalk on a main street in the center of Edinburgh.
We were elbow to elbow, just walking along with the flow of all the other people.
A very fit young man, about 17 or 18 years old, was picking his way through the crowd, coming toward us in the opposite direction.
He was moving toward us at a very fast walking rate.
Dodging, side stepping and dancing through the crowd as he moved against the main flow of pedestrians on the sidewalk.
He bumped head on into the lady just in front of me, almost knocking her back into me.
During this distraction, he grabbed her purse and continued quickly on his way against the flow of the crowd I was in.
As he came by me there was a tug-of-war between him and the lady over the purse.
He had the purse....she had a firm grip on the strap.
To keep from being pulled off her feet by this young thug, as they fought over possession of the purse, she released her hold on the strap.
He proceeded to run through the crowd, quickly rounded a nearby corner and jumped on a waiting motorcycle, which was parked at the curb with the motor running.
By the time I figured out what had just happened, and got to the corner; the bike, the purse and the thief were long gone!
The whole thing took about 10 seconds!

I heard an almost identical story of an incident in Rome, Italy. Snatch, grab, and run to your friend, motor running on a motorcycle. And gone. I almost fell for a robbery scam in Texas. But, my instincts at that time, prevented it from happening.

Be alert, stay fit, have a plan. When thinking about unbreakable straps, consider the possibility of being smashed to the ground and badly hurt, or injured by your own strap. Worse than having your equipment stolen. Be armed - possible even in the most oppressed societies. Myriad commonplace objects can easily be weaponized, not the least of which, a smash to an attackers face with a heavy camera. Personally, I am always armed with something or without.

Hotel/motel room keys are a thing of the past in most places. Now you get a card key that changes after each occupant leaves.

Just a reminder. The people working the card printer are not always familiar with the process. Make certain that all your cards work before going on. Be aware that errors do crop up. We had to go back to the desk to have them do up new keys and programing.

In St. Petersburg, three young men started chatting to a tourist all friendly and helpful. When they left her, they'd taken the lens off her camera body and disappeared with it. Just the lens (expensive Nikon lens).

Great post. This is my biggest fear about traveling to foreign countries, especially in the third world. I look forward to more advise.

The word "advise" (ad-vize) means to give, or receive "advice". (ad-vice)

Here is my story.
Years ago I had some rental property. The tenants moved out in a rush one night owing me a good sum in back rent. While cleaning out the place, after they left, I found a box full of Hotel and Motel keys; about 50 in all. You know, the type with a large plastic fob attached with the room number and address embossed on it. I turned the box over to the police and asked them what was going on. They said the guy was no doubt renting rooms and not returning the keys so he could steal from future occupants.
This gave him the wherewith all to enter these rooms at any time in the future; to steal items. If it was occupied when he entered, he would simply apologize profusely to the occupants; say something disparaging about the dumb front desk clerk giving him the wrong key and leave. If the room was not occupied, he could pick up anything he wanted; locking the door on his way out. In some cases he might watch the place until the occupants left, then enter the room and steal what ever he wanted.
It seems we live in perilous times.

Most places have electronic keys. Those keys are only good for the dates and time you will be in the room then they cease working.
