Photographing the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014. Went down to Garnett, Kansas which is about an hour south of Kansas City. Took my 9 year old grandson with me. He has a Dslr that I gave him and he knows how to use it for the most part. Today, he took the plunge to shoot in full manual. None of these in this series are his, however.
Oh, and for all of you Captain Obviouses out there whom feel it necessary to point out the dangers of the guy laying his head on the rail taking a shot, Don't bother. The railroad police were right there and they could care less. The locomotive was stationary and this guy is not that stupid.
Speaking of being stupid, guess what? Yep, me. As part of my profession, I average taking over 1,000 photos a day - all in Jpeg for legal reasons. Like an idiot, I forgot to put my camera back to raw. I took over 100 shots today, and yep, all in Jpeg. Since I shoot with a Sony, it doesn't matter. Their internal conversion machine is just that good; always has been. The raw police need not bother.
Enjoy!

This was tough to get a shot without poles and people in the way.

Here is that guy I was talking about.

Serves this guy right. While I was taking pictures he pulls out a tripod right in front of me blocking my shots. Jerk.

I was going to go there also, but I would have had to take time off from work. The good part is that I did well enough in Garnett I did not need to. I was also going to go to Edwardsville to catch it on the way to Lawrence. This has always been a good spot to photograph trains. I have captured the 844 and the 3985 at that location several times. Again, no need to this time and I would not miss any work. Thanks for looking!

Did it go "Squish" or "Plop"?
He does give another meaning to "Riding the rails".
Otherwise, a great set.
Great set of shots. Your #4 is a bit like a couple of mine shot in CA back on October 15. My wife and I waited for the engine in the Banning Pass with Mount San Jacinto and the Windmills in the background!

Yeah, the backgrounds here kind of sucked. I was going to go to a great spot for photographing it as it was leaving Kansas City, but I felt that these (I have a lot more to process) will suffice.
