I have had a Canon Power Shot SD4500IS close to ten years now and has just now not seeing the card to record photos. Have charged battery, changed card but to no avail. Sometimes the built in lens does not retract well when turning off. Considering the length of time had it it feasible to take to camera repair for look see or time to find a Santa?

Could be crud in the card slot. Try air blowing - not the canned compressed air, too much moisture. For the lens, maybe lubrication needed. Don’t try that DIY. If the camera features suit your needs, getting fixed might be cheaper.

Rather than spend cash on repairs you might want to take advantage of the deals Canon is offering right now. A new PowerShot is about $250.00 right now on this official site from Canon.

Call Canon for suggestions re the card. I don't believe those cameras are designed for repair if it's something more serious; they can confirm. Time for shiny new!

Used one, about $50 including shipping and tax on ebay. Says that other than some dark pixels at the bottom of the lcd screen (see the pic they provide) it's in good working condition. If it is not, paypal/ebay will refund your money including postage both ways.

Most of those Power Shot models contain plastic gears. I doubt Canon has parts to help. But, there are many places who have cannibalized parts that will fit your camera, BUT, their may be a lot on internal gears either ready to go, or have gone, it may be a losing quest. http://www.digitechcamerarepair.com/

Time to replace it. It has served it's useful life.

I had a similar incident with a very useful and very good Canon zoom Power Shot that I used quite often as a backup on vacations. It finally began acting up and finally the lens wouldn't retract. I sent it to Canon and they quoted a repair charge to refurbish it. I bought a newer model. PS cameras are like Timex watches. When something goes bad, it's time to upgrade. BUT I would take the suggestion of trying to clean off the card contacts with a small clean cloth taped to a paper hanger. There may be crud on the contacts that the cloth might be able to clean them.
