I'm surprised at the idea of coulrophobia - fear of clowns. I watched a TV show last night that featured a character who was afraid of clowns. That seems to be a rather popular idea on TV and in movies, although I hadn't heard of it till recently. I can understand being afraid of those killer clowns in movies, the ones who are made up to look scary. They're designed to make us afraid, but the smiley circus clowns inspiring fear is hard to understand. Come to think of it, I know a woman who is uncomfortable around clowns.

Of course, any phobia is defined as irrational, like a fear of heights, or cats, or fish, so I guess I shouldn't be too hard on those who suffer from coulrophobia.

Cats and Dogs don't like them either. I believe it has something to do with the face not being normal.

Seinfeld's character Cosmo Kramer is affraid
of them. I never liked them, but was not affraid.
As for irrational fear of heights, I know that
g=9.8 m/s² and I weight 72 kg. Yes, I am
terrified of heights.

Having worked with a guy who was totally terrified by clowns, it can be very real.

Just walking up behind him with a clown nose, you would watch him sink in his chair and melt under his desk. OK, it was cruel, but so fun. Every week or so, someone would do it to him.

I remember as a kid, my mother took me to a Barnum and Bailey Circus. I had so much fun there. And clowns were an important part of the entertainment. I never had fear of them whatsoever. Movies depicting them as evil, are movie hypes to change their persona, to sell tickets. In fact, in the late 1990s, I knew a person who did children's weekend birthday parties as a clown. Doing the makeup was time consuming, as well as taking it off. One attribute of a real authentic clown, is that they never talk. It's all mimicking. His clown fees for two hours were non negotiable, and he still got bookings. And, it was a part time job for him. He had a full time job during weekdays.

My mother told me a clown scared me when I was 3 years old and I guess that is why I have never liked them to this day.

This thread brings to mind an old joke: Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says: "This tastes funny."

But wait. There's more! Two other cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: "I've never liked clowns." The second one replies: "So just eat the noodles."

I'll be appearing here nightly.

Maybe someone can clarify this. Does the fear of falling have less to do with the harm that may come from falling than it does with the fear of succumbing to the desire to experience the fall?

I had as a very young child what is possibly the scariest nightmare one can have. I opened my front door (at what I knew in the dream was midnight), to a clown standing there. I screamed, and jumped in my parents bed. A few days later, I dreamed that I opened my front closet door, to a clown, the same one. Screamed, parents bed once again.
I wasn’t and still am not afraid of clowns, but I assure you, that if one shows up at my front door at midnight, I am going to blow his fool head off.
