I get the Canon News (sales) letter and saw that the SX40 now has an instant $80 rebate (down to $349). That made me curious. So I went to the Canon Rumors website. :hunf:
There was some advance info (more rumors) coming out of Photokina (sounds like a product expo). It indicated that a new SX Big Zoom would (could, maybe, maybe not) be announced there.
With Christmas only 105 days away I think Ill wait to see if there will be an SX (50 maybe) on my Christmas list.
I s the rebate only good at a Canon factory sale?

photokina is the largest and most prestigious photo trade show in the world. It is held every 2 years in Germany at around this time. New products tend to get announced for this show. In the last several days we have seen new pentax announced, new Sony's. Nikon will make an announcement soon from Dubai(why?) the d-600 and perhaps more dslrs hopefully. How long has the sx40 been in production? If it is over a year then probably the sx 50 is coming. Just curious after the sx60, will canon jump to the sx80, seeing how the sx-70 was the finest Polaroid camera ever made?

Our local Walmart has marked the SX40 down to 339 from the previous 379, no coupons needed!
B&H now has the SX 50 for pre-order. Just found it today.

WOW!! 50x optical zoom!! (1200mm) Saves in RAW+JPG, has optional REMOTE Release!! ISO 80-6400!!
Covers most of what the SX40 was lacking. Anxious to see the REAL WORLD sample images to see what happens in low light!! And a suggested list of only $50 more than the orig price for the SX40!!
Now for the wait to see the ACTUAL results!! Sounds like a great upgrade.... starting to save now.....
The only thing that will get me to upgrade is faster focus and faster shot-to-shot.
50X zoom is sure impressive, though.
DP Review has both the SX50 and the D600

The focus and shot-to-shot times are supposed to be significantly faster according to the reviews!

OK here is a question for everyone. Would you rather have the Canon SX50 with the 50X zoom to 1,200mm or the Panasonic FZ200 with half the zoom range but f2.8 for the entire zoom?
WHY?

Actually i believe the FZ200 goes to 1200 in the digital zoom but only has 2.8 to 600. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I checked the specs on B&H and the zoom is Optical: 24x, Intelligent Zoom: 48x (which does equal 1,200 mm). The SX 50 is Optical 50X.

SX50 is 50x optica (1200mm equiv), plus 4x Intelligent for a total of 200x!! The SX40 does very nicely with the 35x optical plus 4x IZ (140x) for a total of 3360mm equiv. The SX50 will be a 4800mm equiv. Guess I better get a good tripod to be ready for it!!
