Automatic rifles can not be used for hunting or self-defense by civilians. They have been illegal for civilian ownership for decades.

Fully automatic weapon ownership is strictly controlled by federal licensing by the National Firearms Act of 1934 and most recently tightened by the Firearm Owners' Protection Act of 1986.
The ironically mistitled Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 banned the new manufacture or importation of automatic weapons for civilian purchase. That left roughly 176,000 registered automatic weapons in private ownership eligible for transfer between federally licensed individuals
The transfer of such weapons is handled by the ATF's NFA branch. Basically, anyone wanting to own a fully automatic weapon needs:
$15,000 to over $70,000 to buy a weapon from someone willing to sell one of theirs, plus
Pay a $200 federal transfer tax, plus
Pass a background investigation of National Agency Check with 10-point fingerprinting.
Additional restrictions imposed by state laws may apply.
So in reality, fully automatic weapons available for purchase by the American public are old, extremely expensive, and heavily regulated collectible items for the very wealthy. They are not used for crimes.
