Seed Head

Walked the backyard today looking for subjects of interest to use for photo session and one of them was the tuffs of fluff on a bush. I picked a small piece with a few dried blossoms and used my combination of lenses in series and extension tubes. I have no idea what the plant is however the tuffs of fluff are actually seeds that resemble those of a dandelion in the way that the seed is attached to tuffs to be carried away by the wind.

Very good. My question here is how do you deal with the halo effects that must be abundant with things like this? I'm asking for a friend... 🤫

Mark, most of the white blur in the background is from out of focus "fluff" deep in the blossom. The lens viewed very deeply into this specimen and the focus moved forward, much like pushing away weeds as you walk through them, an analogy of course for the lens does not touch the specimen.

I've realized that the "view" of the processed stack will be the deepest or farthest point of the focus stack. When I start a stack there is much more in view than when I finish which at times makes me sad that I can't view as much although happy that I get as much detail for what I get. I do not crop or zoom in on my images except for very special situations. I let my choices of lenses and magnification aids fill the frame.

I also realize that my use of gear is much different than what others may use. I happened upon the combination by continuous experimentation (I have little else to do other than to let the dogs out and let the dogs in and pick up dog poop).

This one may not be the best example so if you see something in another image that I can share, I am more than eager to do so. I have a few more textures that I am in the process of staging and processing tonight.

Mark, in continuation of limited halo and fringing.

I use a method that produces near telecentric 'flat depth of field focus' at infinity far away from the subject. Due to the high level of magnification there is a virtual aperture, different from the number on the lens, it is the image of the aperture as seen from the subject, this is done by calculation, again not by the number on the aperture ring.

Because the field of focus is so flat, it reduces and in most cases eliminates perspective distortion. It is that "perspective" that adds the confusion to the stacking processing which lends itself to halo and fringing and allows focus stacking free of "echo" or "fringing" artifacts....except when I goof up with the distance in steps (a major oh poop factor) or in illumination which I often do.
