A dozen or more turkeys decided to cross the road along my usual backroads commute one morning. Did they cross as a group? Of course not, they went one at a time, just close enough together that there was no hope of getting between them. Quite a traffic jam.

Can wild turkeys fly? Yes. It suits their roosting and eating habits to not fly too high nor far. Here's a You Tube vid that shows them flying, gliding the main goal to find a high tree possibly for protection or viewing.

I have personally seen them fly with no apparent effort. It's just not their "thing."

Here in New Hampshire their feeding habit is about a 5 mile diameter circular route. They don't walk from feeding spot to feeding spot. They fly.

Thanks for the info and the link. vz

Thank you very much Karin. The turkeys around here qualify as a nuisance. vz

Your post title “When pigs fly” reminded me of our favorite bread location on Route 1 in York, Maine. It is called by that very name. We always bring home about 5 or 6 loaves of a variety of breads for our daughter and son-in-law as well as our neighbor across the street who picks up our mail and newspapers while we are away. When Pigs Fly also has a pizza restaurant in the same building. Some unusual pizzas there.

Great shot! I saw a group of spooked turkeys take off while golfing but when I got to my iPhone to take a pic, they had landed in a wooded area! Quite a spectacular site! Congrats!

Thanks very much Jim. A lot of this wildlife shooting is anticipation of what the critter is going to do. Some telegraph and some don't. vz
