I'd like to support the comment that Bill De made that the reach is the same whether you shoot in crop mode or crop the image later. I would add that the advantage of shooting in Crop Mode is that you can see a closer live view in the LCD.

However shooting in Crop Mode will increase the Depth Of Field, whereas shooting in Full Frame mode and cropping later will produce the more shallow DOF of the FF. So, consider your desired DOF when making the decision.

Sorry, I meant to quote comment to the original poster.

Sorry to be ignorant, but please help me understand how "shooting in Crop Mode will increase the Depth Of Field."

I have both of these cameras. In my experience, one of them is somewhat overrated. The other is much underrated. In truth, either of them can do >98% of anything asked in the hands of a competent photographer who understands their capabilities.

From a technical standpoint, it matters very little which of the two cameras you choose. There's not 3 cent's worth of difference between a D500 image and a DX crop from a D850. Since controls and menus are essentially the same, capturing those images isn't any different either. Much has been made here around the difference in maximum frame rate, but objective data suggests that there is not much meaningfully difference there either.

Would you please explain which camera is over rated and under rated? If you don't want to hear everyone elses opinion on yours please pm me. Thank you. I have a D7200 and an thinking of upgrading to the d500.

These are both great cameras. I believe that there is something of a "mania" around the D850 that attributes a level of magic to it that exceeds its reality. And for some reason, a large number of folks pigeonhole the D500 for only one or two types of photography, resulting in its being severely under regarded as a great all-around camera. There is also a huge amount of misinformation shortchanging its low light performance.

All things considered, if someone offered me a pick between a D500 or a D850, I'd pick the D850 without blinking. Not because I think the D850 is a better camera, just because the D500 is geared more to sports photography. The D500 has the same advanced auto focus system as the D5, that's for serious sports photography. Like I said before, the D850 is no slouch at 7fps. you can order the battery and motor drive to bring it up to 9fps. that's pretty incredible for a 45 mp. camera.

Thank you for your explanation. I only have a few Dx lenses and quite a few Fx. For the price difference I think I'll get a D500

The D500 is an outstanding camera, and right now there is $200.00 off on just the body. BUT wait, black friday is coming, they might throw in a vertical grip. I would wait a few weeks and see what they offer.
Below is a grab shot with the D500 and the 200-500 mm f5.6 lens.
I cannot tell you how many photo contests I have won with this camera. It is outstanding.

Again? This topic has been beaten to death; it ought to have its own section. I have a buddy who keeps on beating me over the head on how great his D500 is (I have a D850). He wears me out. Yet, I have never seen a single pic he has taken with his D500, only talk about how great the pics are. BLAH! BLAH! BLAH!

What would you use?

I will take both

Landscape 850

Animals I’m reach impaired, will use 300 f 4, pf and tc 1.4, or 70-200 2.8 and tc 1.4

I also have, rarely use tc 2.0

I’m thinking the 850, dx mode might be slightly better for animals and if close could switch to fx and fill sensor

Seems pixels about same

Doing a week in Montana along Missouri River and Lamar Valley In December

I’ve got the landscape lenses covered

Help me pick the animal setup, realizing a 400 and more would be nice, but not realistic

Thanks

Just take the D850, it is pixel rich so cropping should not be a problem at all and it will allow you to capture shots that might be too close with the crop sensor.

That is also beaten to death here, especially those who talk a good game but yet cannot post a single image. All talk and no action. That wears me out, folks who can talk at 100 wpm but yet can't back it up with a single image.
When folks here strongly suggest one lens, I sometimes ask for an image example, not one time have they posted an image to back up their argument, not once. And I am not talking about anyone who already posts here, I am talking about those that talk, talk, talk, talk, and will not post.

cbtsam, Sorry for the delayed response.

Here's a D500 v. D850 example to explain:
Constants: Focal length 300mm, Aperture f8, Subject distance 50'

Field of view (FOV) (diagonal):
D500 = 4.6'
D850 = 7.1'

Depth of Field (DOF)
D500 = 2.504'
D850 = 3.829'

To obtain the same (lesser) 4.6' FOV on the D850 image: either crop the image in post processing or shoot in crop mode (which is merely only using the center 20.3MP of the sensor). The DOF in either case doesn't change, but remains at 2.504'/3.829' respectively.

The megapixel count of the image after cropping is about the same (D500/D850 20.9/20.3 respectively).

I'd take both because I always take a backup camera! I have the D500, a Nikon 200-500 and Nikon 80-400, and a D800 and a Z7. In Yellowstone I use the D500 and the 200-500 about 95% of the time for animals and either the D800 or Z7 for landscapes, which I don't take a lot of since I'm usually there for the animals.

Thanks for the above data response, that's above my technical capability, these great products share so many outstanding characteristics.

My less than data driven which you supplied, assumption was that the two, in DX mode, were quite similar megapixels, both have outstanding focus, fps, high ISO capabilities.

willy6419, I think you're responding to me.

Yes, the D500 and D850 megapixel count will be close to equal, when the D850 is in Dx mode. Additionally, the D850 in Dx mode will also have a deeper Depth of Field (that of which is perceived to be in focus) 3.8 feet v. 2.5 feet.

Yes but the 850 gives you way more for even in crop mode. That's handy.
