If you've been following the posts of Photolady2014, DebAnn and Sark17 recently, you've seen some amazing photos from Africa. Photolady did a couple in Monochrome that were really great. That inspired me to look at some of my past zoo photos and imagine them in B&W and how I would treat them. I would urge you to read the caption for each, especially #5, before Downloading. Comments and suggestions are always welcome. Thank you.

Really cool. I'm going to do the same thing, being mainly a B&W guy back in the film era. I have 1300 images from the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park this summer, so good project for a rainy day (lots coming soon I think).

Really nice work, John. My only suggestion would be to try to get more detail in the shadow areas. Such as the 2nd one, tiger - it's mouth and eyes and that stripe under it's right chin, and maybe the front side of that old wolf (#3).

Otherwise, terrific!

Many animals seem to lend themselves to B&W. My favorites are the last two. The eagle is perfect, and I like the drama in the wolf. Nice job.

Thank you, Siemienczuk. I think there's a lot of creativity to be had in our endeavors. Besides it's quite enjoyable. Good luck on your end and I'm looking forward to seeing your work. Post it with a title that I'd recognize as zoo photos or B&W photos.

Thanks KT for your generous comment and suggestions. I noticed both the things you mentioned and maybe should have pulled the tiger. I had a couple others shots I could have used or waited for another opportunity. These are all JPEG's and there wasn't much more detail to be had. Actually he was so stationary I probably could have tried HDR. There is detail on the wolf, but my idea was to emphasize the side/back lighting with almost a silhouette of the wolf. Would work better from a different angle. Anyway, thanks again. Suggestions are the most helpful feedback.

Thank you Photolady for being my inspiration to try it out and your nice comments. I'm sure I'll do more in the future and would certainly welcome your critique and suggestions. I did glimpse your post today of the backlit cats at sunrise, but didn't have time to really look. Getting back to it when I finish here.
