Let's put it this way ....
Nikon buys parts from Sony.
Sony doesn't buy parts from Nikon.

The D850 sensor is manufactured by Sony, designed by Nikon.
Same goes for the 36MP sensor in the D810, if the same senor is in a Pentax I wouldn't be surprised to hear they are paying something to Nixon. I doubt however that it's the same sensor,

The Pentax K-1 has a slightly newer version of the Sony Designed senor in the Nikon D810, because the D810 was release before the K-1. Not sure what precise sensor is in the Pentax K-1 mkII.

Sony got into the camera business by acquiring Minolta! Sony as I hope everyone realizes also, where they started, makes Home and professional electronics, and owns Columbia Records and Columbia Pictures (purchased separately from CBS, which is now only a broadcasting company).

IMHO, it is wise to put your money into your glass. Digital camera bodies and their sensors are analogies to a computer and although I believe there are differences, they are somewhat minor although the same cannot be said between the quality of various lenses.

The actual real name of Sony is "Sonyaevsky", made by the Russians. They have a special transmitter in all their cameras that sends your photos to the Commies so they can spy on us...

"So why not go Sony with the latest sensors?"

Why not go Nikon? No, Nikon does not use old generation sensors that I know of. The processor in camera is responsible for speed and quality of colors. Not two 24 Mp. sensors are built the same and even if built the same the processors in camera makes them different.
Sony is a global leader in sensor technology and although I have not used nor intend to use their cameras I know they are well made and the image quality is excellent. Having Zeiss lenses for use with Sony bodies is a godsend.

He is not a troll and a Viet Nam veteran I believe. Sony makes great sensors and cameras but their menus are idiotic and their audio ain't too goo either. I use all 3 brands and suffer through the minutia of it all.
They're all getting better and we are the lucky ones . Even Fuji is improving and I have hope for them as well.

They both use the same sensors which is what makes the photo today in the digital world.
Of course Nikon uses older generation sensors after Sony is done.
So why not go Sony with the latest sensors?
Just wondering?

For me it boiled down to ergonomics. I tried Sony, but after 30+ years of the "Nikon feel", I could not get used to the cramped and often unnatural distribution/position of the back buttons on the Sony.

Hasselblad is also no the only one that uses the sensor they currently use, but it's what they do that counts.

For the majority of the kind of photography most people do, sensor quality is has become a mute point. Sensor size is still counts, but mostly in low light. People are getting great images on one inch sensors like used in the Sony RX line. But, lower light sports shooting, I think big sensors still matter.

Mute your point!! Moot point is arguable. Maybe that was the dreaded “spell-check monster”??RJM

I am a Sony fan because I started my photography with Minolta and have a lot of Minolta/Sony lenses. I think most people stick with a brand because they are familiar with the menu system or have acquired lenses and accessories for the brand. I do agree that the Sony menu system is more difficult to use, but you get used to it. Sony, Nikon, Canon or many others are all great cameras capable of great pictures if used for their intended purpose. I wouldn't worry about the sensor.

I have used Sony since it entered the digital camera market with Konica-Minolta and eventually bought K-M. My first DSLRs were K-M then I changed to Sony. Have never had a problem with Sony DSLRs and many of my K-M lenses are compatible them. They were the basic leader in digital photo technology and why Nikon and others use their sensor technology. K-M and Sony had features on their cameras that others didn't. My brother, a retired professional film photographer and Nikon addict, loved what I could do with my digital Sony's, but when he bought his first digital, it was a Nikon. He still likes my Sony DSLR better than he does his Nikon and has to buy additional digital compatible lenses for his Nikon. I have never owned a Nikon other than a pocket camera, so I can't really speak to Nikon.

I switched from Nikon to Sony in part to get a better sensor, but more important to me was the difference in attitude. Tech support at Nikon would not even talk to me about using anything but a Nikon lens on their camera. In contrast, Sony actively supports the customer even when they drift away from Sony accessories.

Why? Because I have considered the following attributes/issues when I last upgraded my system;

a) Sony G lenses are more expensive, and being relatively new, there are few options on the used market.
b) I have found Sony to be inferior in low light conditions compared to Nikon, both in image noise and focus.
c) Although initially intrigued by the smaller form factor and weight savings, after renting Sony for a project I realized that most of the bulk and weight comes from the lens, which means no difference in real life.
d) I have been shooting Nikon for over 20 years and found the bodies to be very tough, and when I do have repair needs Nikon service has been very quick and thorough, as well as reasonably priced for items out of warranty.

Thanks for asking.

I too have found Sony not as good as my Nikon's for birds in flight, my Nikon's track better. My Nikon has a touch screen, I can blow up shots quickly on the screen and scroll from one shot to the next, no so with Sony.
And the Sony takes time to WARM UP, I call it, when you first touch the shutter button the Sony takes a moment to turn on, the Nikon is instant on as soon as you touch the button.
And yes, Sony may have won the sensor war, then why isn't it as good in low light as the Nikon, answer, Nikon's firmware is better, the exceed processor is better in the Nikon.
I have been comparing the Sony a9 to my Nikon d5, D850 and D500, so far the winner for wildlife and moving subjects is the Nikon, in fact, it is not even close. Even my older Canon is better than the Sony.

Sony is now making Nikon's high-end sensors. They've embedded a clever bug into the Nikon cameras with these Sony sensors: the Nikon DSLR suddenly dies after a encrypted number of flips of the mirror the sensor can detect as different from the original Sony mirrorless cameras. Just look online for 'Nikon Sudden Death Syndrome'. I've seen a thread where they think from your Nikon serial number you can identify the week number in the calendar year (01 -> 53) your camera is most likely to die. The syndrome isn't even very hush-hush.

Sounds like Sony is part of the Deep State.
