The little ones ooze personality!
I agree that #1 is the better candidate of the group shot. Personally, I like the composition of the center group better in #2 - the man is standing a little straighter and I like the interaction between the girls and the women better. I can't explain it very well, but something about the arm positions feels better to me. If you're into Photoshop work, or just want to play with it for practice, the center party of 5 from the second shot with the outer group from the first could be a good combo.
Either way, the first shot is a great gift for someone's mom - it's a real family in a real setting, not a staged production with fake smiles. She can look at it and see everyone's personality shining through. It's a lovely gift for you to be a part of.

Thanks for your comments. I think we are going with #1 with minor touch ups.
You already hve some valid points to watch for. My 2 bits, The lady with the yellow sweater stands out like a sore thumb, all subjects in my opinion should wear red if one does. The lady in 1 to the left is too square to the camera. It makes her shoulders look too big. The lighting is very good and the family is a great looking family.

Lovely set. But I like 1,3, and 6 the most.
4 is next.
Great family and wonderful pictures
