These are with an 80-400mm zoom with a D7100, I believe. You have to be patient, but the opportunities are there.

I will have to get a new Gimbal Head before I go again.
Lost mine last spring while hiking.
Don't know where it ended up.

I was there last week with my Nikon D500 and 200-500mm lens. I wish I had a longer lens, since the sluices that were opened (where the eagles congregate to fish) where furthest from the bank where all us photographers were. My photos (except for the tree shot) are all heavily cropped (down to about 11% of the original).

I was there this morning ...... not much activity ...... arrived at 6:30AM and stayed until noon ....
most of the activity was on the side opposite the photographers .... shot about 400 photos .... not one worth keeping .... also .... the fishing walkway was closed .... you could not shoot at water level ...

Yeah! They certainly aren't fooling the birds.....only themselves.

Once it gets really cold and the plant runs at or near capacity, things pick up.
Was the water level high? If so, this also cuts down on the activity.

I do not think the water level was high .... the gates by the generating station were closed .... they were allowing spill from the right side of the dam .. .... I will try again when it gets cold ..... thanks .... it is a 2.5 hour drive for me ...

Why does everyone go on that 1 specific day is that the only day the eagles come out to that dam? And for the literal techies here yes I'm being sarcastic. but am curious as to why so many people go out on a specific day I would imagine the eagles are there other days

It is a tradition, and a lot of the people going on that day are not due hard photographers. The "season" for photo bums is really from about Thanksgiving through January 15 - depending upon the weather. The warmer the weather, the fewer the number of eagles gravitating there, it seems.

I may not have read the original post but where is this dam. I just got back from Minnesota where they have a lot of bald eagles and there's a rescue center in a town called Wabasha, Where I learned outside of Alaska Minnesota has the largest number of bald eagles in the US. And I've seen many on the Mississippi river separating Minnesota from Wisconsin dooont yaaaaa knoooow lol. I was born there so I can make fun of them right?

Conowingo Dam is in North Eastern Maryland across the Susquehanna River.

Shows you how out of touch I am. I live 5 miles down river from the dam and I don't know what "eagle day" is. I see eagles every day so don't have to drive up to the dam. Two perch right behind my house everyday. It's amazing watching them dive bomb for fish. My longest focal length lens is 200mm, so I never get any decent pics.

We must be neighbors. I live near Festival Shopping Ctr about a 1/4 mi south of it. You somewhat north of Bel Air?
