A gaming computer is nothing but a fast processor, a big chunk of memory, a SSD hard drive and a fast graphics card with at least 4gb of memory. The big time gamers will spend more on the graphics thsn the cost of the rest of the system. You don't need that level of graphics. A good nVidia card will serve you well. If you're not stuck on a laptop, then I would recommend a desktop. You usually get more bang for the $ and more ability to upgrade as things change.

I don't game either, but gaming machines are well suited for graphic work. And aree cheaper than upgrading a regular computer. My dell portable is a work station and so is my Lenovo. but none of them can match the Dell Alienware. I do a lot of Video so I need a fast rendering. My first Dell took 30 minutes to render a half hour, now only 3 minutes.

Long story but my ASUS laptop died. I just bought (like last week) an ASUS ROG-ZEPHYRUS Gaming laptop. I am in AZ for the winter all of my CD's are in WA. Can't download some programs right now and have not had my old HD copied to the new machine yet. But the photos downloaded from the cloud come up fast and color looks good. New machine does NOT have a SD slot and no CD drive but both are work arounds. By and large I am happy with new machine.

FYI
I can work on 200M files with this "Old" computer setup and speed is not an issue. It just gets it done. About the only thing I want to up grade is the video card from a 1G card to a 2G. With Photoshop I have the scratch drive mapped to the SSI HD. That did make a difference.
I am a hobbyist and don't need to process hundreds (or thousands) of photos from a shoot but, even if I did I could only work on one at a time. As an old retiree I fit with a very large percentage of the UHH membership and don't feel that we need all those high end, latest wizz bang components. As I said I can work on 200M (or larger) files without my set up dragging its feet.

Hello Hoggers, just wanna get a feel of how many out there are using a "Gamer's Computer desktop or laptop" and is capable of handling the subscription of Photoshop, OnOne and the full Topaz suite. I'm mixed between getting a regular {dell, HP, Asus, etc.} or what specs should I be looking for? I've set my budget for around $1400, and I don't really want a Mac. Thanks in advance to all, this is such a great place to ask questions like this.

If you have $1400, you should have no problem finding a gaming laptop with a CPU capable of processing photos. A deluxe model desktop is the best option computer for processing photos, like Dell. However, laptops are portable for travel. The Asus, Dell, Lenovo, HP, and Acer, Brand names, are your best bets for a laptops. You need a good CPU, such as an Intel i7, preferably with 16gb of RAM, and 1TB HDD. Or 500gb SSD. And capable to be upgraded to twice that storage.

I just updated my HP desktop to a SSD. The performance increase is many-fold. So my lone advice would be, regardless of brand, to get a computer with an SSD.

To slow for me, I process many files at once thanks to sync. Of course my movies need fast as rendering take a lot of processing power.

If you're worried about enough ooomph, get a workstation, a lot more powerful than a gaming computer and already more tailored to the tasks you're looking for!

Like I said I use two Workstations. One Dell & the other is a Lenovo Neither one are as fast as the new Intel 4.3 X 6 cores, 12MB cache even though they are also 6 cores Intel Xeon but the cache is only 3.7GH.

I bought an HP that has a M.2 drive for the OS and programs and a SSD bay that has a 1T for data and photos. I use it for on the road and the M.2 makes it run pretty fast. I don't know for sure, but I'll bet you could get a newer version of what I have that will have larger drives and an even later CPU than my i7.

Just yesterday, I ordered a custom workstation, from AVA Direct. I7 with 64gb ram, 2tb M.2 SSD, 3tb HD, GTX 1660 video card w/6gb ram. Liquid cooled tower. That should keep me going for another decade, like my last system has.
