I just returned from a trip to South Africa about 3 weeks ago. We spent a few days in a game preserve north west of Durban (close to Ladysmith). We also spent time in Capetown. The weather in early October (springtime for them) was perfect for us. At the game preserve, it was in the 50's when we left for the first game drive at 5:00 AM, but warmed up to the upper 60's and lower 70's by mid-morning. Layering was essential to be comfortable as you drive around in the open safari vehicles, as the wind chill can be deceiving. Ours provided lap blankets, which were very welcome.

The drought previously mentioned meant that the spring flowers were just starting to come up, which is later than usual. We had one rainy day in Capetown, but the other days were clear and beautiful with similar temperatures.

The Migration is between Tanzania and Kenya (Central Africa) while South Africa as in the name is in Southern Africa some thousands of kilometers away.

I bid once too often at a charity event and now have 😉 to go on a week long photo safari in the eastern portion of South Africa. We will be 275 km (170 miles) north of Durban near the Indian Ocean. Will also be spending time in and around Cape town.

I am a lurker and have read about equipment and have somewhat of a handle on that so leave part that alone. What I want to know is which season is best to go. We should have time to plan.

I just returned from South Africa - Kruger National Park. The safari dates were October 2-11. The weather was perfect - end of the dry season when animals are plentiful and visible in the landscape. Temperatures were coolish in the morning and around 75 in the daytime. Apparently, soon after I left, temps went up to unbearable heights unless you're used to hot. If you look at my recent post on elephants, you can see what the landscape looks like in early October. Highly recommended. Once all the trees and bushes bloom, the animals can hide away.

I was fortunate to make a surfing trip to South Africa in July-August 2015. Stayed in Jeffrey’s Bay, day trips to Addo park, and drove much of the “Garden Route” toward Capetown. Much like home (San Diego) in winter, one day of rain, but mostly sun. Night temps in the 40’s F. Their winter months (our summer in the US) were ideal.

If you won a prize GO! What is weather for a photographer? Various opportunities! You mentioned Durban and a few guys mentioned Zambia, Kruger and so forth. Durban is in SOUTH AFRICA at the bottom of the AFRICAN continent!!!! Personally I don't like Durban, summer, autumn, winter or spring. It's a city along the coast and I don't like cities either. Been a wedding and press photographer for years but today can not photograph people or cities. If you can get away from the city there are many nice wilderness regions to explore. You get snakes and bugs all season so what, you can photograph them!!
