So I tried it this morning. Its wide open and @ 1600 ISO...conditions could be better...but it works.
Yes and I can see it works quite well, you should use it more often. What camera is the lens attached to?
As your image suggests, the 70-200 is a great and versatile lens. Use it.
Back in me ol Nikon film days, the 70-210 was one of my auto goto lens.
Beautiful image Joe - might want to get that lens out of the bag more often!

This focal length always seems to become a part of my gear, whether Canon or Sony. And with both, top notch images are always a possibility, if you can get close enough to your subject. And that is a big "if" assuming your subjects are those flighty little guys. So, what do you carry out into the field. I'm of the attitude that longer is always better, so with limited carrying resources, I don't have a sheppa, I take longer glass. So, unfortunately, the 70-200 f/2.8 stays behind for the most part. But, if you are shooting Big Bird, and you know you can get close, the range of this lens comes in handy. And, it works very well with extenders. And, it becomes especially hand in low light situations when you need fast shutter speeds.
Thanks for the reminder it's in my bag and nice pecker shot. Did you crop this much?

That's what's great about these high MP cameras. Shorter lenses, bigger crops! But you are still better off IMO with a longer lens and less crop. Images even better! That's why 600mm is in my bucket list.
You have an excellent lens and you should use it more often. It is also a great optic for portraits.
