I own a Nikon d7200 camera which as you all know has 2 slots for sad cards. I am planning on taking a trip to South America next spring for about 15 days. So, the question is should I take 64 gb cards or 1 tb cards. Of course the 1 tb card is going to be expensive. Also, am I going to lose any clarity on the videos or pictures if I use a higher gb card? I would like to take as few cards as possible but at the same time I do not want to go to buy more cards in a foreign country. I did this several years ago and the card did not work at all.

I went on a 12 day cruise in Europe this summer and too a gazillion photos. I used a total od 2 64 gbyte cards. Do you plan to bring a computer with you? I uploaded photos to a portable 2 TB external HD that I bought at Costco, they are selling it now for $69.99. That way everything is backed up. If you have decent wifi, you can also upload every night. Even considering all of that, if you depend on 1 or even 2 SD Cards, you risk failure, albeit unlikely, of the card and loss of your photos.

The size of the card has no affect on image quality.

Cards are small, what's the problem with taking a bunch?
I have nine, one in the chamber and eight in a card wallet.

SD card size has no effect on image quality. I would take several on such a trip. They do sometimes fail.

Also a vote on taking several.

When I travel I use one set* of cards per couple of days (may be one day or three depending on places an usage).

Not because they are full, just to protect in case of losing them, failure, robbery, etc.

That's because I don't take a laptop or other way to upload them for backup.

*I have also D7200 and configure it to take duplicates on both cards

Gotta agree with most of the other responses. With many small cards (I usually stick with 32gig in my Sony A7RIII), you can swap them out daily or even more often & not lose as many pictures if a card gets corrupted. I keep mine in a Pelican SD card holder I got from B&H for $20.00. It holds 12 cards. At that price you could get 2. Keep the empty cards in 1 & used cards in the other.

I like using micro SD cards. You just need two adapter cards and as many micro SD cards as you feel like buying. The take up practically no space and they come in 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 GB sizes. Both my PC and Tablet have a port for them which is convenient. I only buy good ones so I've never had one fail.

Thank you everyone for your input. I think I will take several cards. What the heck, if I use it it's fine. If not, I can always use others at a later time.

I use several smaller cards and download daily, If a card goes bad you will limit your loss. If a larger card goes bad you may lose everything.

Our Olys also have two card slots and they are set to write each image to both and we bring a Mobilite, flash drives and a 1 tb portable hard drive to back up our files each night. We end up with three copies on different media. Additionally, we travel with enough SD cards to make over 16,000 images without reusing any cards and over 45,000 while having 2 copies. Cards and backup systems are small and cheap compared to once in a lifetime trips. It is better to have too many cards and copies than too few.

64GB is plenty, and the price is reasonable. Have several cards and get a good case to protect them. Don't delete images till you get home.

FYI: Your devices (According to Sandisk) can handle the follow cards: 16G, 32G, 64G, 128G & 256G in either the Extreme Pro or Extreme Plus. In other words, although the 1 TB card might fit, it's not recommended for your camera. stay within your devices limits or risk damaging the card or corrupting the image files.

Also, no one touched on the card transference speed as this would also make a big difference in how fast the data or images are stored on your device. For more information about the specifics of the Sandisk cards.. search "SanDisk | Product Compatibility Tool"

You didn't say anything about your shooting parameters. For simply round numbers, your D7200 will create about 1000 RAW images for every 32GB. If you shoot the same way I do, you might shoot 1000 images per day. For me, I'd fill 2 x 64GB in just four days. If you shoot large-fine JPEG, you can put about 2000 JPEGs per 32GB or about 8000 images for 2 x 64GB, or 8-days on my shooting style. You can adjust the images per day assumption to match your expected usage and estimate the number of cards needed. Page 380 of your D7200 gives a table of Memory Card Capacity based on file type and image quality.

You've already been given good advice on cards so I won't do that, but I will mention a WMU you. if you have it on your phone you can connect your phone to your camera and do a whole lot with it one of which is look at your photos with your phone and immediately upload any that you want to send immediately to a friend or something to to brag a little bit. you can download it from Nikon site.

I would also set your 7200 up to record the photos on both cards so you have an immediate backup. I use 32's but for s trip like this I'd use 64's.

I use 128 cards. That way I have more capacity than I will ever need on a trip, and leave my old photos on the drive as a last resort backup of my old photos.
