This was shot outdoors using natural side lighting with a dark background ( In this case a dark green Texas sage bush ) Set about 7ft behind the cigarette. Spot meter for the smoke! This should give give you the proper contrast between the background and the smoke along with subject separation. And of equal importance, Try to shoot when there is little to no wind.

If you are saying the cigarette is a Pall Mall, I must disagree. Pall Mall in my day was a non-filtered cigarette but Kools were. However I do not recall them having a cork paterned filter. To me looks more like a Larlboro.

If you are saying that cigarette is possibly a Pall Mall, my opinion is that it is not, Pall Mall was a non-filtered cigarette while Kool was filtered. Personally I think it looks more like a Marlboro because of the cork appearance of that filter area.
