You don't need another lens, the lens does it all. THAT'S THE POINT.

So... you miss my point. That camera(I have one) is in no way all the camera you would ever want, and you’ll never put another lens on it. The glass is always going to be the same on that one thousand dollar mistake. Why not start out with a good body that also lets you improve it ( new glass) down the road? You have your opinion, I have the correct opinionLOL!

It's all about the glass. That is the bottom line. I find Canon has a larger range of lenses then most brands. The cameras, Canon, Nikon, or which brand you chose are all good. Cameras do not hold their value, but glass that is a different subject. It's the glass that really makes the photo pop. It's the glass that holds it's value.
If you are starting from scratch start by looking at lenses offered and then base your camera body on that.

Right on ... RJM

I usually shoot with a Sony A6000. For me, this offers a good compromise.
- Smaller than average,
- Cheaper than average,
- Better low-light quality than average
- (Slightly) faster focusing than average

Having said that, though, you can't go wrong by buying almost any of the cameras made by the major brands in the last few years. The Canon and Nikon versions of the same camera both offer slightly better colors, and a better choice of lens upgrades, and only a slightly bigger camera body.

Olympus and Panasonic offer slightly smaller total camera (and lens) size, slightly smaller weight, slightly better weatherproofing, but slightly more noise in low light.

I would definitely consider Fuji as well as Canon, Nikon and Sony. If you shop carefully, you can find a Fuji X-T2 and the 18-55 “kit” lens within your budget. Regardless of what brand you choose, I would consider factory refurbs and gently used from reliable sources such as UHH members, KEH, B&H, Adorama, Cameta and your local reputable dealer. The majority of my gear has been purchased used or factory refurbished, and I’ve never been disappointed (but I have been able to afford gear that I couldn’t have afforded new).

I just bought a Fuji X-T2 with an 18-55 lens and the vertical battery grip with all the new- box assessories for 900 bucks. Not cheap but still a great camera.

I have been shooting Nikon cameras for more than 55 years. Other cameras will do the job also.
An excellent buy right now is the Nikon D7200 that you could buy refurb at a very reasonable price. The 18-140 VR lens will cover the majority of your subjects.

Older and wiser voices can help you find the right camera brand, especially when you are willing to listen to those who shoot Canon.

I'm starting to get a little more serious about photography and decided to treat myself to my 1st decent camera for Christmas. What is your personal preferences? I'm researching nikkon and cannon. Budget is between $500-1000 including a lens, which I know depends on the type of photo I will be shooting. Curious to hear your thoughts and if possible give a low end and a high end suggestion with my budget. Thanks for your input in advance

Suggest you check out Fuji X-T30. It has same sensor and processor as the Fuji flagship X-T3. Get the Fujinon XF 18-55mm zoom, image stabilized, lens. Also has Fuji film simulations (Velvia, Provia, Astia, Acros, etc.). Buy “Like New” from MPB.com or KEH within your budget. Happy shooting.

And a very good buy as well. You’re gonna love the Fuji! Light weight, intuitive controls and great lenses. I have a FF Canon, but I’m using my Fuji more and more. My son, who also has a FF, bought an X-T2 on the advice of a pro Nikon shooter, who carries the Fuji for personal use. He shot some pictures of my new kitty in very low available light the other night at ISO 25,600 (!), and while there was certainly some noise, the images were very usable.

As many have pointed out the major camera makers all produce good products (Canon is better) and placing one brand over another in today's world (Canon really is better) is not helpful for many people. So you should consider your options (Canon is awesome) carefully.

Here is a helpful ranking of Camera brands
#1 Canon
#2 (left blank intentionally since none of the others come close)
#3 All the rest.

Hope that helps.

Top of your budget and one you'll probably not grow out of for a long time would be the Nikon D7500 with 18-140 lens. Will cover 95% of your shooting needs. Low end would be a refurbished D5300 with 18-55 kit and 70-300 tele. I like the D5xxx line for its light-weight and fully articulated screen.

Before you spend your money ask yourself this. "Have I mastered my phone camera?" If the answer is no then you are throwing away the money. Why not give it a charity.

My preference is Nikon. But that shouldn't make a difference to anyone.

I shot with Pentax for many years starting with a Spotmatic F. When I needed a long lens Pentax didn't have what I wanted and I chose Nikon starting with an F100. I still shoot Nikon because I haven't needed to switch brands.

Had I decided on Canon to replace my Pentax way back when I probably would have started this post with, 'My preference is Canon'.

If I was starting over today knowing what I know now, and trying to look into the future, I might be looking at mirrorless. In that case Sony would be a strong contender as would a couple of Micro 4/3 cameras.

There is an inherent problem with recommendations. Everybody has their own history and reasons for being where they are today. Those reasons may be unique to a single individual. I'm not saying to ignore recommendations, just realize they are pretty much all biased.

Is it good luck or bad luck that determined your brand of camera?

Panasonic! Because it’s the right to do!
