First reaction......I guess for me, if I take a photo of a baby or a pet, I'd like the first reaction to be "Awwwwww"; if I take a photo of a sunrise or sunset, I'd like the first reaction to be "Ooooohhhh"; if I take a portrait, I'd like the subject's first reaction to be a smile; and if I take a photo of nature, human emotion, or something awe inspiring, I'd like the first reaction to be "wow" or a lump in one's throat. In any & all cases....a reaction to my work.

I checked out Petapixel. Nice little site; I bookmarked it.
Also bought some cheap san disk memory advertised in it.
Thanks for the suggestion.

A photograph is a moment in time. That moment may be special to you, your family or to a whole group of people. Most of my images are special to me.
If you have your camera ready and you are able to capture a special moment of history then you may become famous for that one image. Not for your whole body of work.
Take the beauty that is yours and enjoy what you are doing.

Reminds me of several years ago when Joshua Bell took up residence at a New York City subway station and proceeded to play his beautiful violin for an hour. People passed him by in their hurry to go somewhere. If I remember correctly, only one lady and her daughter stopped to listen because the lady recognized him. Bell made something like sixty dollars during that hour, not a bad rate of pay for an hour's work. However, that night he played at Carnegie Hall for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The public doesn't always know what it wants, or what is good. Sometimes you have to help them along by telling them that this is one of the world's greatest photographs, or this is Joshua Bell, one of the world's greatest violinists.

English Wolf, I agree with you. One just has to look at something like Picasso's Guernica and imediatly people will jump to either side of the room and declare it either junk or great art. I know it is a little different with non-photographic art, but the talent and creative effort is still the embryonic genesis of art, of any media, that transcends the vagaries of faddism. Either you like B&W or you do not, Chrome or color, woodblocks or etchings, watercolor or oil. It does not matter. Ones likes sometimes is irrelevant to the reality that transcends the test of time. Museums and galleries do not throw out great art of any sort that is for sure. My favorite dislike is Peter Max, but that is just me, so there. ($.02 +MHO). Note, not a simgle word about digital, something I know nothing, nada, zilch about, but in time.

With respect to being a master or the exper in your field, its like the story about J Watt, who was hired by Con Ed, so I have hear it told, to do some work on their faling turbines. After two weeks of work writing and making chalk marks, he presents an outlandish bill of $250,000. In shock the bean counters ask him to itemize his bill. He complies, Chalk $0.49, knowing where to put chalkmarks $249,999.51 Yes an expert in his field commands whatever the traffic will bear. But, it doesn't always mean that it is worth that much to somebody else. There have been photos that have exceeded $200,000, I imagine.

I was watching a movie last night and there was a great line that pertain to this subject.
"When a rich/famous person buys your work; then you become famous."
Just imagine when word got out that the President of the US was buying and collecting your images. What would happen?
