Hi Everyone,
I am asking for advice to help me get rid of AA battery acid that leaked into my infrared cam battery compartment. I left the batteries in for approximately 14 months while storing it.
Someone told me to use a q tip dipped in vinegar. Do any one of you have any other suggestions other than taking it to a shop to be fixed? Thanks in advance.

No. You have two options.

(1) Scrape out the corrosion as much as you can. A Q-tip is not good for that; I use small flat blade screwdrivers. Then apply white vinegar with a Q-tip to the surfaces. Replace soiled Q-tips with fresh ones. Don't drench it; it's a surface application and you don't want it leaking into other parts of the camera. Do not use anything else, especially something like baking soda that can leave a residue. When it looks clean, let it dry and check that the corrosion is cleaned out. You might need to repeat this process over time. When dry, test to see if it works. If not, then

(2) Send it for repair. Actually, you might talk to the repair folk, because it's not always possible they will repair it. I had an Olympus flash with corrosion; I got it working but the corrosion kept coming back because I couldn't get into the bottom of the battery compartment. They wouldn't repair it.

Battery acid is quite corrosive and if you don't get it all, it will continue to corrode. I use a fiber glass scratch brush to clean the contacts thoroughly then clean with DeOxit or other de-oxifier.

Look for a product called Deoxit made by Caig Labs. It's a product for electronics.
