Former ethics chief under George W. Bush, Richard Painter, had some harsh words for Donald Trump on Monday after the president called the Emoluments Clause “phony” and defended his presidential profiteering.

Trump didn’t just trash the Constitution in his remarks, but he acted as though he was doing the country a favor by being president.

“You people with this phony Emoluments Clause,” Trump said earlier in the day. “I would say that it’s cost me anywhere from $2 billion to $5 billion to be president. … I would’ve made a fortune if I just ran my business.”

Painter said that the specific clause of the Constitution that Trump whined about is critical and ensures that government officials aren’t being influenced by foreign powers.

“It is not a phony Constitution. We are not a phony country,” the former Bush ethics official said. “We have a Constitution, and we don’t want a phony president.”

Trump doesn't believe that the Constitution is binding on him. He's an arrogant, ignorant, pig who earned the impeachment proceedings that have begun. The only real question is, are there any Republicans who are going to uphold their oath of loyalty to the Constitution.

Former ethics chief under George W. Bush, Richard ... (show quote)

Richard Painter, a guy who worked under one of the most corrupt administrations in history, advising them

on ethics and giving the thumbs-up to, among other things, torture, now gets to parade around on the

news shows as some sort of quirky Comey-esque hero for bravely opposing Trump.

One of the things most people don't realize is that several Trump officials have used private e-mail servers to conduct White House business. When Democrats requested documents to review the practice, the White House simply refused. The e-mails remain secret, and the White House has said they will not ever release them.

It has been two years since this was discovered, and the White House has produced exactly zero documents. This is literally the exact same thing that they still believe Hilary should be locked up for.

"You probably missed it, but over the weekend, the most important story of 2016 came to a close. The story so earth-shattering, so profoundly important to the lives of every American, so monumentally vital to our democracy that it got more attention than any other during that most consequential of presidential campaigns.
I speak, of course, of the question of whether Hillary Clinton used the wrong email account. And guess what:

A multiyear State Department probe of emails that were sent to former secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s private computer server concluded there was no systemic or deliberate mishandling of classified information
by department employees, according to a report submitted to Congress this month.

You don’t say.
With the possible exception of the credulousness granted to the George W. Bush administration’s propaganda push in advance of the Iraq War, the insane amount of coverage given to Clinton’s emails was the worst media screw-up of my lifetime. And apart from an exception here or there, you’ll find almost no journalists — and certainly no news organizations — willing to acknowledge how badly they blew this most minor of misdemeanors out of proportion. The consequence is that Donald Trump is now the most powerful person on Earth."

Paul Waldman October 21, 2019

So, It has been found by the State Department that there was NO mishandling of Hillary's e-mails.

I suspect there was no mishandling of Kushner's e-mails either. The whole idea that a government-run server is inherently superior to a private-run server is unproven.

I had a whole rant about how corrupt Kushner is, but I deleted it because I keep getting off the subject of photography.

But yes, I will turn down paid photography work from people that still support Trump. It is not a difference in politics, it is a difference in morals.

You don't know jack about the constitution, and MSNBC is not the place you want to teach you about it.

In all fairness to MSNBC, they are correct about the foreign emoluments clause in Article 1, Section 9 of the Constitution. It really is open to a certain amount of interpretation, and China really did grant Trump 38 trademarks in March of 2017. There are at least three lawsuits in the courts to determine if these gifts violate the Constitution, so MSNBC is correct that the matter is "up to the courts to decide". Trump is literally betting his career on winning those lawsuits.

In all fairness to you, I really like the bird photos on your Flickr account. I like the ospreys and the eagles the best, but the pictures of the pelicans are also interesting and eye-catching.

When it comes to the constitution, everything is up to the courts, to illustrate that point in modern America the 10th amendment holds almost no meaning.

It takes about 15-18 months to get granted a Chinese trademark. You do the math.

Also, to address ethical concerns, Ivanka Trump shifted the brand’s assets to a family-run trust valued at more than $50 million and pledged to recuse herself from issues that present conflicts.
