I used Gimp on a 086 PC....you could watch your image appear 'line by line'...! ANY adjustment repeated the same line by line change. You just let it get on with it, and made a cup of tea.

Hubby taught himself programming on the kids' Vic20 computers grandparents gave them for Christmas, many computers later, many hours spent waiting for buffering, now he's a retired programmer, contents himself with his tablet and browsing Internet. The first modem I remember, on a CoCo, was 2400 baud. When we changed to a 9600 baud, that seemed lightning speed! I just bought myself a new computer this year because I was having to wait seconds for Lightroom and other software to load. How spoiled are we, anyway!

I still have a full-up Commodore 64 system.
I vividly remember moving from a 14.4 to a 56k modem. It was like buying a new car.
