I will be taking some photos at my grandson’s HS football game tonight using a Nikon 800 camera and 200-500 zoom lens. Two questions: do you use the lens hood with the lens and two: do you use shutter priority mode to set your shutter speed at 1:1000?
Thank you for your advice.

Use the hood if you have over head lighting. Shutter priority or manual is fine. Shutter speed 1/1000 isn't set in stone. But every time you lower it below it. You take a chance of the extremities blurring. At night you need to be around f 2.8 (didn't see you mention what your lens was) Helps keep the ISO down. Post up Monday in the sports section and let us see how you came out. Lots of experienced sports shooters in that section.

Good luck. Better be an extremely well lit stadium...

When I shoot sports I set ISO on auto then use manual mode for aperture & shutter speed. You'll need at least 500 for shutter and as open as you can set the aperture. I always use the lens hood and a mono. Good luck...I really enjoy sports pbotography!

IMHO another primary but less mentioned reason for lens hood usage is 'insurance'. It helps protect the glass from damage. I had my 200mm 'separate' from the body a couple of years ago and land 'glass-forward' on gravel. No damage other than some minor scratching on the hood.

Yes, use the lens hood, you do not want stray light from the stadium lights entering your lens, and, it adds additional protection for your lens.
A like to use F6.3 on that lens, gives great results. So, at F6.3, when you get there aim camera at player about in the middle of the field and adjust your ISO until your shooting at 1000 sec. or higher. You could, at that point, use those settings and just go manual, the light will not change but at a HS stadium the light may fall off at each end zone, but you can also check these when you get there.
I don't know if the D800 has GROUP AUTO FOCUS, but if it does, use that focusing system. Continuous Auto focus is also suggested and the highest fps you can get.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Your camera settings will vary according to the illumination present. You will be using a high ISO for sure so be prepared for noise in your images.

Action and wildlife require high shutter speeds and high ISO settings and many photographers prefer Shutter Priority. I go with Aperture Priority but I watch the shutter speed and ISO.
I have not done sports at night so my comments will not be helpful to you.

I'm assuming you are going to use a Nikon 200-500/5.6 zoom. Under the lights, you will not be pleased with results. If you have something faster that's a F2.8 version, I would suggest using that wide open. I always use a lens hood. Best of luck.

Always use the lens hood. At 1/1000 sec If you are using that body and lens wide open it will be noisy. Have a good noise reduction strategy in post processing ready to implement.

Don't forget to use the flicker detection mode in the camera, otherwise you will get uneven lighting and color across the frame. You can probably get away with 1/500 unless you are very close to the field. Manual exposure settings and auto ISO with an upper limit of 3200 should be fine. Don't be afraid to use 6400 if you need to. It is just a little noisier than 3200.

Please post your photos in the Sports section. I use the same lens for night HS football with my D5600 and have a real problem with noise . I’m open to suggestions. Ive tried auto ISO ,manual, 1/800, wide open at f5.6 . The ISO jumps to 12,500. Thanks. Paul

Sounds like you need a full frame camera and faster lenses. And shoot raw so that you have more options with sharpening and noise reduction. If your ISO is jumping to 12,500, then use 1/400 sec. Make sure you don't have any exposure comp going on.
