Ocean Sunset

Yesterday I was in Mendocino Ca. and took a series of shots of the sun setting into the Ocean. The atmospheric distortion added a few color highlights to some of the shots and changed the shape of the sun from moment to moment. A few of the pictures also had a bird flying by in the distance. Once the sun had set I also took a shot of the moon with the dark blue sky as the background. All these shots where taken using a 500mm Canon lens with an 2X teleconverter attached to get a 1000mm focal length. The shot of the moon was also slightly cropped to bring out more detail. All suggestions and comments are welcome.

You may not realize this, BUT on photos #2 and #3, you happened to capture the “Green Flash” at the top of the sun. Google it. It’s a rare atmospheric phenomenon! Great job, even if by accident! 👍

I noticed the colors from the atmospheric distortion. I thought that the green flash was the same type of phenomena but usually associated with the moment the sun completely sets.

Yes, cool. I've never seen the Green Flash in person. But then I don't make a habit of looking at the sun.

Normally the green flash occurs for just a second or two. So this is could probably be described as more of a green linger as it shows in two photo's that where ~1 minute apart and was several minutes before the sun actually set. Thanks to all for checking out the photo's.

The green flash occurs when the very top of the sun disappears below the surface of the ocean. I suspect what you have there is a little bit of chromatic aberration. Nice photos none-the-less.

It was definitely chromatic aberration from the atmospheric layers since I haven’t seen this before or since with this lens.
