Photography Websites are reporting the price of the upcoming Nikkor 58mm f0.95 NOCT Z-mount lens at $6000-8000.

I wonder who is going to buy that lens and how many they will sell at that price?

I am sure of two things, 1. Yes, they will sell many of these lenses to many people, 2. I will not be one of them.

If Leica can do it why not Nikon. The Leica Noctilus f0.95 is priced even higher. They sell every one that they make. Usually you have to pre-order because they are in very short supply.
Of course Leica can price that way because nobody makes better glass then they do.

Leica is selling blue sky for 85% of the price.
Old used Canon 0.95 50mm sells for around 3k and it is close to 60 years old. 😀

I had an old Cannon (I think) f 0.95 lens for a rangefinder camera. The depth of field is razor thin and in those long ago days It took a rangefinder camera to focus it accurately. Personally, I would be just as happy with an f1.4 lens especially considering the cost and the good high ISO performance of many modern cameras

Wow. Is that how much the latest iPhone costs? :-)

The Leitz counterpart is $11,300, or $15,900 for the Cine model, making the Nikkor a real bargain. Yes, and people do buy them. Many more photographers rent them, though.

Your last sentence is probably where the truth lies. I suspect that the lens will sell well to companies that will rent them out.

What a crazy beast for today. I recall there is a vintage rare Canon 1:0.95 lens. Super fast lenses made some sense for film since for quality 35mm you really did not want to go above ASA 400 films. I've shot 1600 and 3200 film and I think it is C**p!

I own 50mm or 55mm lenses of
1:2.0
1:1.8
1:1.7
1:1.4

And can not imagine what I would need even 1:1.2, let alone 1:0.95 for! The newest cameras can handle ISOs to 100,000. And mine do OK in the 10Ks.

The Canon 0.95 was first preceding the Leica lens.
That and the quality make it a popular lens to this day.
Yes DOF I would imagine is razor thin.

Time will tell. I expected it to be expensive, but not that expensive. There are better lens choices for me at that price level. But then, we don't really know what it will cost yet, do we? Best of luck.

Remember the stories of President Lyndon Johnson whipping put his d**k and showing it to reporters? That's what Nikon and Leica are doing with these lenses. and the folks that buy them are engaged in the same measuring contests.

There is at least one, Red, high-end digital motion picture camera mfr. that has an option for Nikon mount lenses. A $6000 lens in theater grade cinema photography is a cheap lens. Even if it's a special purpose lens you might use in a single dimly lit scene. I suspect that some of the market is this one rather than photography.

Yes. Wasn't it in the film Barry Lyndon that a scene was shot is candlelight with a very fast lens? Their market will be rental houses.

The Canon. 95 is used frequently in this application.

It is gold plated and can replace your spouse. It talks back and gets the last word in also.
