#6 You can’t use someone’s photo just because you found it on Twitter.

Summary:

Photojournalist Daniel Morel sued Getty Images and Agence France-Presse for taking and selling photos of the 2010 Haiti earthquake from his Twitter account.

Outcome:

Twitter allows for posting and retweeting, but not commercial use of photographs posted by users. The jury awarded Morel $1.2m in damages.

Despite this ruling, many still believe that copyright is lost when a work is posted on social media. As we explain to infringers every day, this is simply not the case, and it was an expensive lesson for Getty.

So, when is Getty going to steal your image or any image here at UHH? Before or after the rivers run dry? Or the sun falls from the sky? Go back to my original comment about being in touch with reality, not Powerball pipe dreams ...

That's because that's what they want it to be.
Repeat enough times.........

Question: I make greeting cards and have seen so many beautiful photos I'd like to use as a background. Is that legal? I don't see any copyright marks on any of them.

You have been a member here since 2012. You are obviously 'interested in photography'. There have been many arguments regarding copywrite : but few about emulation....(creating something similar)

You may not be in the position to travel far and wide - however doing something 'in the style of' can improve you perspective and shooting ability.

Dissect the images that appeal to you .....What exactly makes them shine and then look for your own 'versions' in your own location. People who make great photographs do so in different places.....BUT they have a formulae that works or identifies their work - Copy THAT!

imitation is the highest form of flattery.....

Have fun

Agree.

Anyone with any standard of ethical behaviour would be bothered using images taken by others. Well, at least they should be.

NO...NO....NO. Not legal, not good practice and is done way too often. Contact the photographer and ask them if you can use the image, you might even offer to pay for that use as their time, effort, and equipment cost a lot of money over the years they've been photographing.

Really you need to ask? Would it be ok if I walked into your house and helped myself to something that is not mine???

Thank you all. I don't sell my cards but I send them to a card ministry. They sell them to the congregation members. So to be safe, I won't use anyone's photos on this site.

You may not sell them but the church does? How does this exempt you? Thou shall not steal comes to mind. Are you letting the ministry know where the image came from? If nothing else respect the work a person went through to get to location and the time it took to get the shot.

Then you state you won't use any from here like that makes it better??? Adjust your moral compass and look at it from the owners viewpoint. Now if you ask and are given permission no problem.

There's no need to be snotty. I was just asking a question because pictures are in the public domain.

FYI, I haven't used any pictures from this site. I was asking if it was permissible. My moral compass is just fine, thank you. Jeez people, lay off a little please.

The secret of getting ahead in photography is stealing someone else's image.

I thought it was buying more expensive gear? With a $10K camera, you won't have to steal from others.

Which site(s) have you used images from?
Is a church exempt from possession of stolen property, given to it by the thief?
Does your ministry know you have put them in jeopardy of a copyright infringement suit?
Do you plan to continue to steal images?

Feeling chastised? "Repent, and sin no more."

Churchers hate it when you point out their hypocrisy.
