I'm a raw rookie so... please explain why continuous focus "is a better way." (This is an honest question.)

As I understand it, pressing then releasing the button turns Servo AF on. Pressing & releasing the button again turns Servo AF off. Not as good as BBF, but it might be useful, huh?

For me, I have my cameras configured for AI Servo whether the camera supports Back-Button Focus or not. So, on a BBF capable body, I press and hold the BBF as I compose my image(s). The camera begins focusing the lens and continuously focuses the lens until I remove my finger from the BBF. If I want to focus and recompose, I just release the BBF when I have the lens focused.

For cameras that offer AI servo but cannot be configured for BBF, I hold the shutter button half-pressed causing the camera to focus and continue to focus thru pressing the shutter fully to capture an image. I lift my finger slightly back to half-pressed as I continue to monitor the subject in preparation for more shooting.

I don't find that I have a need to turn on / off the AI Servo, certainly not by configuring a dedicated button for this on / off function.

Yes, I have a copy of the manual and yes, it does enable reassignment of buttons (at least I'm pretty sure it does). But that manual (for a Nikon fan-boy) is like trying to learn English by reading a dictionary and I am in a hurry because my younger daughter will take me on a circle-the-island junket day after tomorrow.

I just had a faint hope that there was someone here who is familiar with this old jewel of a camera who would walk me thru with something simple like "push this button, then push that button, then scroll down 3 lines etc". If I can't get spoon fed, I suppose I will take along my Nikon, but I was hoping to give the SX60 some exercise WITHOUT having to slog through a manual that uses unfamiliar/Canon terminology.

This is why when I want to comment on a post (which I rarely do) I check the previous posts to make sure somebody hasn't already said the same thing.

Longshadow and I often post similar comments at nearly the same time, so we tease each other. I think our closest was 10 seconds, but I forget who won that

Repetition within a thread is a common occurrence. Sometimes an OP gives follow-up clarification or additional information; sometimes he/she acknowledges receipt of the information needed. But incorrect or repeated input continues for many pages regardless.

Hello Bell
I had the same issues trying to figure out from the Nikon manual how to setup back button focus. The manual tells you things but not clear on the sequence etc.
Anyway
I found on YouTube several but one really good step by step videos, the way I learn best.
Try these out

FYI, both links are Nikon DSLRs rather than the OP's Canon Powershot SX60, a camera that does not appear to support the reassignment of functions as needed for BBF ...

And thank YOU for having a go at it. I am left with my conundrum.

But, dear, we are much too old to need a conundrum any more.
