The brown pelican is readily distinguished from the American white pelican by its nonwhite plumage, smaller size, and habit of diving for fish from the air, as opposed to co-operative fishing from the surface. It and the Peruvian pelican are the only true marine pelican species.

The Anhinga is a long-necked, long-tailed swimmer of southeastern swamps. Often seen perched on a snag above the water, with its wings half-spread to dry. It can vary its buoyancy in water, sometimes swimming with only head and neck above water (earning it the nickname of "Snakebird").

The sunbittern is an elegant bird with long features and plumage decorated in orange, brown and white. Native to tropical habitats in Guatamala and northern Brazil, they are typically found in lowlands, foothills and well-wooded banks of streams and creeks.

The adult roseate spoonbill is most noted for its stunning pink color and its uniquely-shaped bill. It is the only one of the six spoonbill species with brilliantly colored plumage.

In their natural habitat, salmon-crested cockatoos typically feed on various seeds, nuts and fruits, such as papaya, durian, langsat and rambutan. They can also feed on corn growing in fields, where they do considerable damage, and are therefore, considered a pest by farmers.

Paul, more than beautiful images, especially of the pelican. Pelicans are my favorite bird to watch. Not only watching them dive for dinner, but also watching them fly. They are beautifully graceful birds in the air. On an early calm morning, you can watch them skimming, in formation, just inches above the water. Occasionally, their wingtips touch the calm water leaving little ripples behind. We used to have a local pelican that would regularly walk our pier. He would stand next to a lucky fisherman until he received a portion of the finsherman's bounty. It wasn't shy and even had a little bit of an attitude. Everyone loved taking pictures next to him.

Great captures..

Thank you SalvageDiver! I'm spending a few weeks again in Florida for the holidays and hope for some more and close pelican opportunities. Glad you enjoyed.

Excellent series, once again Paul. Thoroughly enjoyed them. Never get tired of learning from you. I've got to get back to the zoo soon! Were you using your tripod on the 300mm + 1.4 and 2.0 shots?

Thank you Dave! I would have had a tripod with me for most of these locations, but maybe only the pelican used a tripod. Probably the sunbittern too. For the pelican I remember I was checking my phone at the end of the day when I saw the light on these birds. I don't know that I set everything back up at that point as they were in the pond nearest the exit of the zoo. The cockatoo was hand held, for sure, with a 135 being 'too long' how close. I put on a 12 EF extension tube to focus closer given how close as I could get to the bird.
