It wasn't a lot of the men, either.

Of the 81 (some reports state 83) pioneers who began the Donner Party's horrific winter in the Sierra Nevada, only 45 managed to walk out alive. The ordeal proved particularly costly for the group's 15 solo travelers, all but two of whom died, but it also took a tragic toll on the families.

Much more info available online.

Most of the survivors were women. Tougher...or better support?

Chivalry and sacrifice of the men for their wives and families.

Google is your friend - searched "donner party survivors" = https://www.google.com/search?q=donner+party+survivors&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS852US852&oq=Donner+Party+survivors&aqs=chrome.0.0l6.19894j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

I have a friend who was part of a group of students at a community college on Long Island in the 60s who ran a campaign to name the new campus cafeteria "Donner Memorial Cafeteria". It won the election by the student body, then before the signs could go up someone spilled the beans to the Admin - that is correct, the school Admin didn't have one single member who knew what the Donner Party was.

I believe the University of Colorado has an Alferd Packer Grill, another similar story.

Wikipedia has the whole story in detail. Tragic.
