I recently bought a new Canon 80D which was an upgrade from my previous 60D. When I downloaded the first photos I took with the new camera the RAW version of the photo does not appear. I am using the photo processing software that came with the 60D.

As you are aware Canon no longer includes the software with the 80D. Does the software need to be upgraded ? Have I done something wrong in the camera setup ? Is there another answer ?

If I neglected to say the JPEG image does appear. I am not particularly camera or computer savvy.

If you have Lightroom or Photoshop does the raw image open there?

The RAW files, even with the same CR2 extension, require updated Canon DPP, or whatever software you use. If DPP, visit the support section of the usa.canon.com website and download the latest v4 DPP software for the EOS 80D. Have your camera handy as you need an EOS serial number to enable the download. It's free and any valid EOS s/n number will work, even a discontinued body.

Just maybe the the OP has to get in the shooting menus and set the camera to shoot raw or raw & JPEG. Both may bodies (T6 & 77D) arrived with a default setting of JPEG.

Thank you. That sounds like the obvious answer

That's unlikely because if they were jpegs he would have been able to see those images. Of course he may have thought he was shooting raw and jpeg and was expecting to see two images, so in that event what your are suggesting is a possibility. The OP was not very clear on that point.

Hi RayF,

I recommend downloading and installing FastStone Image Viewer, a free program. I have Photoshop CC. LightRoom Classic and a few other programs to deal with RAW files. However, I always use FastStone to view them. https://download.cnet.com/FastStone-Image-Viewer/3000-18488_4-10324485.html

Good luck,

Older versions of Canon software don't recognize newer RAW files. So it doesn't show, even if they were uploaded. As previously noted, get the latest DPP4. (I have DPP3 and DPP4 having gone to my 3rd DSLR.) I also had to update my "EOS Utility" which now distinguishes between the different models and uses different options for each, like destination folders and such.

You need to update your RAW codec. As stated above, download the newedt Canon software and you'll be good to go.

Use "quote reply" and we know what you are responding to.
As stated the version of DPP that came with your 60D will not recognize the RAW from the 80D and to save money the software disks are no longer packed with the camera. Go to Canon support and under software and downloads you can get all the Canon software - also as stated you may need the SN of your camera. Follow the directions to download and install. Also that is the same place you go to for firmware updates for the camera - if you still have the 60D they will have updated firmware for it also.

Canon no longer provides a CD/DVD with the camera in the box. So, you would need to download it from Canon directly in the support area. It would be pretty much in the same place you can download a pdf of the Users Guide (and probably a little more in depth) and other Guides for the camera and software.

You probably thought of this, but...
I don't have the 80D, but in my ancient Xsi the menu allows you to choose how you'll save your pics: RAW+JPG, RAW only, and various qualities of JPG. Are you sure your selection is what you wish?

The software that came with the 60D is too old to work with an 80D's RAW files.

Simply go to the Canon website of your choice, download and install the latest version of Canon Digital Photo Pro. That will be able to handle the 80D's files. Canon Image Browser (or whatever they call it now), will also be able to display thumbnail previews of the 80D's RAW files.

Think of RAW as "unprocessed" images. They require specific software to view and work with them. And it needs to be up to date with the camera involved, to do so.

JPEGs, on the other hand, are images that have been processed into a widely universal file type, which can be viewed easily with many different software programs.

Note: If you're using a Windows based computer, you also can't see Canon RAW (CR2 and CR3) files in Windows browser. They will just appear as generic icons. If you would like to be able to see thumbnails of them there, too, go to https://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/, download and install the codec you'll find there (costs $10). It can interpolate thumbnails and even enlarged views of virtually any RAW file, right in Windows. This is handy for organizing or searching for a particular file, but the images in Windows are not color calibrated so unprocessed RAW files will naturally appear rather flat and low contrast. They have to be post-processed for appearance.
