The aircraft would come to Zamperini Field in Torrance CA every spring. A sad loss of life and living history. Condolences to the victims and their families, wishing a full and speedy recovery to the survivors.

That was pilot error. The plane ran off a runway that was too short trying to land at a local airfield. Only damaged the landing gear.

Sad indeed! Here is the most comprehensive coverage I've seen.

Sad... prayers for all involved...
They only had a crew of 10 in service with a 1200 pound total crew weight. 500 rounds of 50 caliber ammo per machine gun IIRC.

I understand that the plane lost an engine. Can't this plane fly with 3 engines?

I was at the airport the day before the crash. I took some photos of the planes that were there. This one just seems so surreal. I would like to send my sincere condolences to all those involved and to their families.

I always loved these old birds.

Did this plane have a name? I have seen different B-17s (and B-29s) at shows and flyovers, and I think of them as individuals rather than who owns them.

Thanks Doc. The last time I boarded her was 2008 and one of my associates is one of several pilots that flew her . He was Not on this flight thank God. I shall miss her. I think it was the only B-17 that the Collins Foundation owned....not sure. I know they have 2 Mustangs , a B-24 & a B-25 as well.

I saw her last fall about this time but I didn't photograph her as I have many previous shots of her from the 2008 visit. Maybe they'll repurpose the Tail Section into a monument to her & her crew????

Thanks again
