I have an opportunity to get ON1Effects free of charge. I understand that it can be used as a “stand alone” or as a plug in for Lightroom. Has anyone used it and what is its strong point if any? I know there has been a lot of discussion about ON1 Photos Raw, but I don’t remember any discussion about the “Effects” module. Thanks.

I use ON1 Effects as a plug for Lightroom. I am not an accomplished post-processor, but it serves my purposes well.

Thanks, that’s the way I would plan to use it.

There is a learning curve, but the more one uses it, the better it becomes.

You should download it and install it as a plugin for PHotoshop and Lightroom. You may like it. I use it after Lightroom about 80% of the time. I have On1 Raw 2019, but for quick and dirty (yet very effective) editing/enhancement, I still have On1 Suite 10.5, with Perfect Effects - it is very good.

I am a fairly good editor who has been using ON1 2019 and it’s predecessor for several months. The more I use the program, the more I am familiar with its capabilities, and the more I like it. I works very well with layers and masks. I use ON1 as a stand-alone editor.

Don't waste your time on old software. ON1 has completely been redesigned. go to their website, on1/com. and take a look also there is a especial on pricing.

I replaced (for the most part) LR 5.7 with ON1 Photo Raw in 2018. My work flow for almost every raw file includes the Effects module. Usually Dynamic Contrast, Color Enhancer, Glow, and Vignette for every image along with adjustment In the Development module. ON1 has a lot of capability almost to the point of being a little (?) overwhelming. I’ve pre-bought the 2020 version, scheduled for release later this month. One word of caution, make sure your system meets their recommended requirements, especially your graphics card.

I have had On1 ever since the first Beta, and until now have mainly used it as a plug in for LR (even though I have always had the stand-alone). I got the beta for 2020 the day it was announced and am very anxious to get the full release this month because it may fully eliminate my need for LR. This new version is very fast and has many more features to speed up PP. Right now the only problem with the beta is in the print module which I have reported to On1 for correction. You can download and try 2020 Beta free and try it out for yourself.

I have it install so that it can be used as a stand alone or as a plug-in in Photoshop. There are some really nice presets. It does have a slight learning curve but worth the time to learn.

I have the beta setup. the hardest was the camera calibration but I got it working. I have noticed the increase in speed and the auto function,4 great new filters, and mor presets now with their own slider.

I'll push for on1 raw also. I've been an on1 user for years, first the plugins for Aperature, then LR then when Adobe lied to us about perpetual licenses I started looking for a replacement. After trying all of them I decided On1 Raw was the solution. It is fast and continues to add features. It has built-in HDR and Pano. Software development is always a competitive leapfrog situation. New Features happen in one app then the next release it catches up and passes. The one true advantage to the SaaS model adobe uses is they push out new features and updates without having to go through the release schedules perpetual software has. The new 2020 version of On1 does at least 90% of what ps/lr combination does and about 15% they don't do. I use it as my primary program which pushes out to Topaz and Nik then back to on1. It's non-destructive and you can use it as a browser only type of DAM or you can catalog part of all of your photos. Try either the free trial for 2019 or 2020 (just be aware though it is pretty damn tight it is a beta and has some issues to be fixed).
