Very true. Didn't think of that. I'm just a Linux guy trying to remember my struggles with Windows to provide solutions.

Yup, I've had nomenclature problems with some files when I put them on the Unix web server I use.

Got some images of my daughter's wedding taken by a pro photographer. Now need to sort out the album, BUT none of the programs on my wife's windows 10 PC will do anything but open the image on screen. Several will not recognize file type.
Checked file properties and read write are ticked, as is authorized user as shown by Windows image viewer.
Obviously ._ is a file default. Will simply (?) deleting ._ on each image do the trick?
Do not want to lose the files or I will be in Doggy Poo with the wife.

Thanks
George

In Windoze, files beginning with a period are 'special'. Depending on settings they may be hidden. Many programs generate a temporary file beginning with a period to indicate an associated file is locked or in use. Try copying the file and renaming it to something that does not begin with a period.

I wasn't aware that Windows used leading dots for special files. I always understood that they were files ported over from Unix/Linux systems that used Windows APIs to run, but basically kept the same file structure from Unix/Linux, in which case it would annotate a hidden file or directory. The closest I could find on Windows was that it is more similar to AppData\Roaming and AppData\Local.

But, since the OP didn't have leading periods (dots), this is just more of a fun discussion on OS differences :)

Are you sure the files are all JPEGs? Windows by itself will not open RAW files. You need a software program or install codecs to do that.
But Windows should certainly be able to copy or move the files if you see them in File Explorer.

Thanks all.....The files opened in Linux !!!!
Before I got around to renaming the images, my wife tried again (as she does) and lo and behold windoze worked and she could open copy and save.....what the glitch was ????

It is time I weaned her off windoze...it is getting more and more frustrating. Often she can't even get online whereas Linux connects without a glitch from the same connection....Her updates are up to date and all. As time goes by I am forgetting much of the little I knew about Win....

Thanks all
George

First off, I am so happy that everything worked out for you!!!!

Second, if you had a linux system all along, why not mention it? It would have been much easier to have you look at the files from command line and figure out what was happening, plus the periods (dots) have no impact on files for linux.

Glad it all worked out and you identified yourself as a fellow Linux user!

If you can display the photos, but not copy or print, I doubt it’s a problem with the name. And I doubt that a simple read-only setting is it either. Besides read-only won’t stop printing. These are photos from a professional photographer. I doubt that he gave them to you expecting you to have full rights to the images. Like many pro photographers these days, these photos were probably intended as proofs and were saved using a digital rights management program (DRM).

Watch the suffix. there should be no system characters prior to the .jpg in the file name. Sometimes windows will allow xtra.. and sometimes it won't. be sure to remove any @#! " etc. prior to .jpg when you rename the file. The characters noted and more are used by the computer system and should not be included in a file name, ever. If the ending suffix is anything other than .jpg rename it to .jpg. You should be fine then. Good Luck.

In Windows if you rightclick on a file and select properties from themenu shown you can see if the file has been set to read only. Might be worth checking that.

I too much prefer Linux over windows. Windows has never been much good and it seems to be getting worse.

Good. You could have tried copying the folder that the files were in instead of trying to copy the files directly, then experimented on the copies.
