Wow - less than an hour away and I never knew it was there... High on my to-do list now!

If you go, would you try to take photos and post them here? Thanks.

That sounds like a plan (with permission, of course!).

You don't need permission from me to add to this topic or you can start a new one. I would just like to see some pictures that I should have taken when I was there.

I was referring to permission from the proprietor. ;)

This place is fascinating. We went there a few years ago and thought it might disappear. It thrived for years as a camera store, developing and printing shop. The owner collected cameras for fun. The core business went away with digital but the collection grew.

Located in Staunton (in Western Central Virginia) the Camera Heritage Museum houses a unique collection of antique cameras dating from the 19th century to modern times.

If you can't go there, Google for "Camera Heritage Museum".

I was in Rochester PA a few months ago and visited George Eastmans Museum/House.
There is an amazing collection of old cameras and the way cameras have progressed through the years. I thought the Brownie Box Camera was interesting as most of us Australians had one at some time in the 50’s and 60’s.
An old friend of mine got married in 1951 and they took the Brownie Box on their honeymoon. His wife passed away in 2004 and when he was going through her old things he found the camera in a shoe box. He took it in to the camera shop for them to have a look at it and they developed the old Kodak film, the photos came out perfect and were of their honeymoon. Says a lot for Kodak.

Based on my visit there a couple years ago, the proprietor needs some publicity, exposure and donations. One one hand it is an amazing collection of cameras that document the history of film photography. On the other hand, it may be a collection of consumer junk that nobody will spend the money to maintain.

I suspect the proprietor will applaud you if you offer to post pictures on a photography forum.

I had been to Camera & Palette in Staunton. It was part camera store and part museum. The owner had a lot of vintage cameras. I wonder if he donated those to the museum.

Another great place to visit is the Sunspots glass blowing studio. They have bleachers in back where you can observe them making the glass productsd. You can take photos there also.

For those on the west coast, in Riverside, CA the UCR Art Museum used to house their Photography Museum. They still have a section with many cameras on exhibit. It is located in the Riverside downtown mall.

I just sent this link to my wife, who is less than an hour from there at the moment. She will either stop on her way home, or save it for the next time we are both in Virginia.

Thanks again!

👍. I agree. My old college roommate lives in Staunton, and took me there a few years ago. The owner is one of the most photographic knowledgeable people I’ve ever met. We spent about an hour there, taking photography.

I was also talking with the owner when I was there. He told me about how he got the first shipments of the Minolta Maxxum 7000 camera that became the target of a lawsuit by Exxon. Minolta's logo used the crossed XX's that was an Exxon trademark. Minolta was forced to change their logo and pays fines. The owner kept a few of those cameras for himself.
