Hello everyone. We are planning a trip to a city in Europe with many beautiful/interesting sites to photograph. Unfortunately, the city is also known for pickpockets. I'm looking for a camera bag that is compact, will hold an adequate amount of gear*, and is specifically designed to discourage thieves. Can you recommend a product that is reasonably priced (less than $100)?

* DSLR plus 24-120 and 16-35 lenses. Would love to include my 70-200 as well but don't know if it will fit. Definitely need space for essential accessories (filters, spare battery, memory card, etc.).

NO BAG IS SAFE. In fact, you are setting your self up to be marked if you take any bag. European pick pockets know you are coming and they are very good at relieving you of your equipment.
I travel a lot and now only carry my Sony HX99 in a belt pouch. Pictured below.
PS. I also carry my wallet in a front pocket. And, I stay alert, all the time. Especially in Rome.

Dare we wonder why cell phones are becoming so popular.

I'm not inclined to compromise by not carriing my full frame. If a pickpocket wants my camera, good luck to them. I will chase after them. They will just die tired!

When at rest on a bench, when at an outdoor table, etc always put your leg/foot in the loop of the camera bag strap so no one can snatch and grab.

You must have a big engine on your scooter.

Go with a diaper bag. Make sure it looks really well-used. Put it down in the driveway and drive over it a few times.

We planned a trip to Barcelona, Spain. My wife was extremely fearful that my "baby" would be stolen. She put so much fear in me that I was super vigilant. (I think that is more prudent to be vigilant than buying a camera bag with a diamondback rattlesnake inside.). My regular camera bag is black cloth best up and has various patches on the outside. It doesn't have any logo on it what so ever. She didn't want me to use it. Needless to say she saw a bag and bought it for me unannounced. It is a PACSAFE Z14. This is a sling bag that hold a full frame body and lens plus three other lenses. On the outside it isn't enticing. But it has RFID pockets as well as wire mesh inside the pockets and straps. They also make a backpack model labeled Z16. It's not very hefty on the price tag. About $150 dollars.
I carried the camera bag on board without any problem from TSA. I have a photograph of my old bag and my new bag.

Wherever you are going make sure you know of a nearby camera store. If a lens gets damaged or you need an extra camera memory card you're covered. Also, have a safe flight!
Don't forget to post photos of your trip!

Happy Shooting!

Sure looks like that first bag is a traveling man's bag, especially with the attached light.

I purchased two of these straps...work very well and comfortable to use. Pacsafe products are incredibly well-made.

I use a small roll-a-board for gear between destinations. For daily outings I use a messenger bag worn across my chest to hold the camera and lens(es) for the day. I put one of those airplane neck pillows (lightly blown up) in the bottom of the messenger bag to cushion the equipment. I also use a camera strap that goes across my chest that allows the camera to slide from the bag to my face for shooting. Keeps the weight off my neck.
I used to carry all of my gear (1 body, 2-3 lenses plus misc stuff) in a camera backpack between destinations, but now that has become a lot of weight to sling around when you consider all of the other stuff like phones, chargers, players, batteries, cleaners, books, folders and glasses that I carry when travelling.

The only place I’ve ever been where pickpockets and thieves seemed to be the norm was the Eiffel Tower. Despite being warned, two in our group of about 25 were robbed of their wallets. Three of the best suggestions for camera carriers were “don’t have a bag or pack that is an advertisement” and “try to keep your bag/case in front of you” and “never succumb to any stranger who volunteers to take your picture.” As for the wallets, keep in your front pockets.

Agree with the PacSafe options. We bought a medium size backpack and a cross-body purse for my wife plus both cameras have PacSafe straps. She loved that the zipper pulls could be locked and secured for protection and that the straps and outer material have steel mesh or threads inside to prevent knife slashing. Both have the option to be wrapped around a chair or table leg and locked. We felt very comfortable with these. No problems with TSA. They have various sizes and styles available. Good workmanship also.

Hello
I live in France for 73 years. Unfortunately, there is not only in France where there are pickpockets!
For my camera equipment to be safe (the material is not accessible at the back), I use a Lowepro Flipside bag. There are several sizes.
As far as I'm concerned, I have the Flipside 400 model. I can fit the Nikon D500 with the Tamron 150-600mm lens and other accessories or lenses.

Bonjour
